Someone talk me off the ledge

Hey guys, not ignoring the posts, just... still frustrated. Let's see what I can cover here with a quick update...

Ordered all new filters for my RODI - it has a chloramine filter for those who wondered about that issue. I will pick back up on large water changes after they arrive.

Started feeding a bit more, I had basically stopped feeding, so that probably wasn't helping keep the stuff I like healthy.

Going to go shopping for a bacteria additive this weekend, I am sure my tank is short on diversity there.

My lights are LED, so no significant color shift there.

A Triton test is not out of the question at this point, I will keep that in mind.

Oh, and no, I haven't looked at it under a microscope. I don't even know what I'm looking for there. But I've had cyano before, and I'm pretty sure this is the same.

Try a decent uv sterilizer and when I saw decent I mean like a debarry unit. Put the correct flow through it and make sure all of your water passes through it. A lot of people will say it won't do anything and they are mostly people that have never had or used one. First hard experience in this hobby counts for a lot. Cyano is a bacteria uv will help with free floating aspects of it.

Second thought, what was your rock? Where did you get it? Was it live and did you cure it? Basically rocks could be leaching phosphate.

I'm sure your aware as well but increase flow, look for dead spots and eliminate them.

If you don't set up a refugium, have some good macro algae out competing the uptake of nutrients from the cyano.

I've had my very first out break of cyano recently. I have beating it in around 5 weeks.
- uv sterilizer
- removing as much as possible nightly/every other night right before lights out.
- photoperiod for cheato increased to 24/7
- removing dead spots of flow
- biweekly water changes 15%

If you shop bacteria I don't think smart start is what you want. A lot of stores sell it. Dr tims makes one might be available locally not sure never used it but I think it is popular. I got MB7 from marine Depot. Much larger bottle then smartstart and more concentrated

Did you ever get a handle on it?

Thanks for digging this thread up and asking about it. Truth be told, I am afraid to say anything, but I think I found the problem. It looks like my auto shutoff for my RODI wasn't working, so the waste water just ran 24/7. This caused me to burn through filters at a ridiculous pace. So I would buy filters, test my output, then move on. Unfortunately, after a month or something, my new filters would already be shot. Makes sense?

At any rate it is really just a theory at this point. I fixed the RODI, bought new filters, and am waiting to see how it goes. Since my last update, I lost an anemone, moved the rest of them to a 3g tank, and then did a big water change there after the fix. They seem to be recovering. I've done one big water change on the tank, and it seems better, if only just a little. I am keeping an eye on my RODI output, because my last test showed 60ppm even though the filters were only 3 months old. New filters are currently showing 0ppm but I don't trust them yet.
