Can someone please tell me what these dreadful little things are, and how to get rid of them?

They appear to be a munnid isopod and are not likely the cause of your coral's problem and are simply cleaning up or taking advantage of the available organics as the coral recedes. Search the coral forum for brown jelly disease or RTN.
