I think my yellow damsel did this to its tail, but what are the spots that I see. I'm not sure what color they are, but against the clown they look purple with a line down the middle. They move.....any help would be greatly appreciated I reall do not want to lose this clown.
Water params are all good..

parasites maybe? are u sure they move?

if you dont have a quarentine tank setup.. thats definatly going to be the first step in saving the fish

right. im dealing with the same issue. 2 maroon clowns.. somthings wrong but i cant pin point it....

but if those things are moving. Id hafta say external parasites. what else COULD it be??

Id set up your qt and get it nice and stable. and take this to the disease forum and get the info u need... I thought maracyn 2 took care of this.. but a fresh water dip or formilin dip might be in order.. Ill read the maracyn 2 box... hmm.. just says fun and tail rot.. the rest dont apply

I had to do a formilin dip AND a fresh water dip yesterday. its not as scary as it sounds.. just really need to follow directions. those would knock off the parasites.. but I think you'd need to keep the fish in qt long enough for the parasites in the main tank to die.
Im not sure about this. im sure someone will chime in...

My fish are getting clearish things on theyre eyes that the bta can knock off.. or kill.. i donno... Im having a hard time nailing it down.

How long do you think they can go without treatment....
I have treatments for bacterial infections and ich but nothing for formalin dip or parasites.....

Should i just fresh water dip and go from there?

u sure do.

use ro water
(i used a 5 gal. bucket with 2 gallons of water in it)
adjust your ph. very important to get it very close to the ph they have now
(u can use baking soda, ph up, dhk buffer etc.. I used ph up from aquarium pharaciticals.. cant votch for the rest)
you also have to get the tempurature the same as the tank they are in now
add an airstone so there is plenty of oxegen

heres what i read...
a freshwater dip can last anywhere from 60 seconds to 11 minutes, with 9 being a good timr. but if they start to get really stressed, take them out early. they will get stressed. when mine stopped swimming i moved him along a little bit. if it gets really bad though. pull them out early

id also recommend putting the fish in qt after its dip.... so you can observe it.. and also let the parasites die in the tank.

Id also love for you to get a second opinion just to be safe. ive only had a reef as long as you have... witch def. isent much as u know lol

maggie

ps.. good luck. my maroon means a whole lot to me and I will do everything to keep her alive. this is her second diease/problem

Mine mean a lot to me too Yellow stripe maroon mated pair.......
I think the fresh water dips sound like a good start regardless. And I guess I will go from there.....

Thanks for the help...
Jim

did u hafta pair yours or did u get 2 juvis? I just got my girl to accept a juvi 2 weeks ago. (i qt'ed him first...) hes allowed in the bta and they swim everywhere together. so i just got em paired up and now this. i have to bath mine agian tomorrow too. Im doing forilin first to rule out brook.. sorta has its symtoms but im not sure. parasites are on my mind

They were paired when I got them. I had some perc. clowns about 2 months ago and they died from brook.....

This is definetly not brook, but I've about had it with clowns.......seems to be one thing after another. and they have been doing so well, I have had them for over 3 weeks now..

lol I dont think its just clowns unfortunatly. I think its the way they are treated/shipped even the weather..

I wont be getting more clowns, these guys are gonna make it. but if ever get new fish, they are getting bathed in formilin after quarentine of 4 weeks before they ever touch my reef.

let me know if you see parasites in the bottom of your bucket. I got sand in mine by accident so im not sure...

Wow they really do not like being in there!!!

Brook looks like a white mucus all over the side of the clown. It will only take a couple days for it to run its course. The only way to treat it is with formulin dip.

Hopefully that is not what you have......

Looks like all those spots have fallen off....been about 6 minutes...

I would have to say by looking at the little things that they look a lot like louse?

Till tomorrow...good luck with your clowns.....

Jim

yikes. glad they fell off for you!!!

Im going to dip today.. but its not looking like brook. right now she has crustys on her top fin.. and 1 dot on the side of her face.

I feel so bad doing it because after i put her back she gets stung my the anemone... poor fish

Glad the parasites fell off for you. Almost any external parasite is treated, initially anyway, with a fw dip. Unfortunately many parasites have a lifecycle that includes a free swimming or cyst phase meaning that they will reproduce and some of them will be off of the fish when you pull the fish out of the tank. When the fish go back into the display tank there is a chance that the parasites in the tank will find the fish again.

Depending upon the parasite you may well be able to completely rid the tank of them by leaving the fish in QT long enough for the parasites to die off. The amount of time depends upon the actual parasite involved. Other fish in the tank can be hosts even if they don't show signs of infestation.

FWIW: the reason the parasites die in the fw dip is that they undergo osmotic shock. The salinity difference between their bodies and the dip causes them to essentiall ruputure as the freshwater moves toward the salt.

So what about the othe fish in the tank? Blue chin trigger and a yellow damsel? They both look good now, could this be a clown only deal?
