Run skimmer
Keep normal water change schedule (syphon off dead stuff)
Run good carbon (it'll help get rid of/reduce the smell)
open window
Just let it sit
:) [/B]

agreed
but for carbon use chemipure

what about light timing?
is it less in a new tank vs established?
do i need to slowly increase light time intervals as the tank stabilizes or just come out of the gate with em going 10-12hrs/dy?
t5's for how long?
MH for how long?
i have read conflicting opinions on lighting in a new tank
and just had one of the people at my LFS argue with me about it...well he was arguing i was just asking questiones....i dont want to hurt/burn any LS/LR or any of the hitchers i have.
thanks again

#1 If you want to cycle your tank without worrying about algae growth then you should put the light on for about 4 hours a day. Since there is a lot of organics in your tank to clean out maybe posponing your light cycle would not be a bad idea.
#2 Lighting can be the same in a new tank as an established for the T-5s and halides when you switch bulbs or add new coral you might want to lower the amount of time and work your way back up.
#3 See answer to question one it is really up to you.
#4 T-5s 10-12 hours a day
#5 MH is tough because people grow diff coral and you need diff light for diff corals. If you want a mixed reef i recommend 6 hours a day but that is highly debated.

your hitch hicker will hide in cracks and such and will most likely not be affected by the light however if you want to try to keep some of the coral you can start with t-5s 4 hours a day and work your way up. when you get to 7 hours start with one hour a day of halide then move your halide with your t-5 till you reach 10-12 hours t-5 6 hours MH

hope this helped

it did, thank you
now since were on a roll....
im in my...9th day...
am getting green hair algae all over LR
have read that its good to just let the algae grow for the amphipod population to feed on and increase before adding any type of CUC
i have 1 turbo and 1 lasarius as hitchers but thats it
is there any truth to that or will i end up scraping green hair algae off the LR if i dont get a crew soon?
thanks

I wish i could give you good news after all we have talked about so far. But the Hair algae is another hurtle that must be over come but lets just take it one step at a time for now we will deal with the scent and getting thing cycled when it is time to deal with the hair algae we will talk about scrubbing that.

Matter of fact maybe keep your lights off for a couple weeks to get rid of that stuff.

Anyway if you ever need help and i dont see you post feel free to pm me if you would like. have a good weekend
