Something to think about

I still think the club should use some of the membership fees to enable members to buy a 2g bucket worth of dip... Sell it at about cost to enable us to replentish it. JMO

We gotta find a better use for club funds than a Christmas party that not everyone can attend...

Not sure they make a 2g bucket... lol ;) Nah, I dip everything I get... Well, almost everything... But I'm in the process of another endeavor, that should help me out with that... I use TMPCC and/or Seachem Reef Dip... Sometimes I'll do a FW dip too if I'm feeling froggy...

2g dip in a 5-7 gal bucket works doesn't it... Why would you fill up the bucket if you only need to cover the corals?

So you (not you Randy, but everyone) think the best use of our club fund is a Christmas party and let everyone in the club sit on their dip products? Maybe that's best because they'd have it available at all times.

I don't see why we charge a membership fee if it's not used towards the club's best interest(s). And I don't consider a Christmas party a "best interest". From my experience, that's the only thing we've used it for. Maybe this is a discussion for our BOD in private but since my involvement in the BOD we haven't taken up the issue or many/any other issues for that matter.

Why the heck do we CHARGE a membership fee to ETRC anyhow? Do we use the cash on hand for group buys - NO. Do we use it for things like "dips" - NO Do we use it for door prises at meetings - NO. I think we need to either do something with "our money" or just quit collecting money! It's not the money itself that rubs me wrong, it's the non-use of it that I dislike!

ehemmm, it's tax time... so I revolt about everyone who doesn't deserve/use my money without giving me back something in return for my money.

:mad:We elected club officers to run the club and part of running the club is making decisions, so make some! You are the guy's that are supposed to be organizing and improving the club. If you think using the funds to buy dip is what the club needs, then convince the other officers it's a good idea and do it! If your waiting for a membership consciences then you in for a disappointment. I personally don't support the dip idea but others might. It's just not something I would use, I already have what I need to dip my corals. But if the officers feel that it's a good idea then I trust their decision, that’s why we voted you guy's as officers. So quit b****ing about not using club funds and find something to use them on.:bum:

I've always been reluctant to express my feelings on this subject, but it is one of the reasons I'm always waffling about joining the club. I've probably spent close to $100 in membership fees and donations over the years, which is not a lot, but I never know where the money goes or what it is being applied to. When I was pres, I tried to get monthly treasury reports, but I think everyone thought it was too formal. So I gave up, quickly realizing that my goals for the club were not consistent with others, which is understandable.

The money should be used for something that benefits the majority of members, is related to the hobby, etc. Christmas parties are fine, but, like other meetings, I'm guessing the host primarily foots the bill along with what others bring to the occasion. I'm not going to offer up any ideas, but I agree with Art about not personally needing any dip solutions. However, if that's what the BOD feels would be a good use of funds, go for it! Make a decision but don't expect to please everyone, because, as Art says, it'll never happen. Of course, elimination of the membership fee is another valid option.

Really at this point, I don't care what the hell the Treasury money goes toward... But I'd like to see it going toward something!!!!!!! :D Like I stated, I already have dip and I'm not sure I'd use the club's dip depending on what type you guys decided to buy... Really, its something that is cheap enough, I think everyone should have their own... But I'm ALL for the club buying dip, if its to help educate the newbies and keep them from starting behind the eight ball so to speak with the hobby... I don't expect to see the money returned to me, but I would like to see it starting to be used toward the benefit of the club... There have been a number of good suggestions on how the money should be spent, IMO... And really, I'm not sure that the money was even used toward the Christmas party this year!!!!!!! Some of the ideas I've been most fond of are......

1) Paying the shipping on group livegoods orders twice a year or so...

2) Group field trip to Atlanta Aquarium, Chattanooga Aquarium, or even Ripley's would be nice...

3) Use of funds toward putting together a frag swap...

These are only ideas that I could remember in the last 5 minutes... I know there were others, but we need to get the ball rolling... :)

Lest we forget...the club money has been used more than once to either front the sales of salt or to order salt that has not been pre-purchased.

I don't think club funds were used for the Christmas party last year ;)

I think everyone who dips their corals has their own dip solutions and protocols. Those who don't currently dip probably won't benefit from this anyway (dips aren't incredibly expensive, so I don't think that's a major deterrent). Using fresh solutions is probably better than mixing a vat of various products, but that's not something I claim to know (I wouldn't be participating in the dipping solutions myself). I could be totally wrong here, but that's what I took from this:
Club Dipping Solution

Reaching a consensus is impossible, but one idea was for all of us to make a list (as Randy has started) of possible constructive uses of our club funds so we can plan a few fun projects, activities, or group orders subsidized in-part by club funds.

...now we're talking about it...

I totally agree with Art, that the decisions are for the BOD and it wont make everyone happy no matter what's decided.

Since Matt's started an idea thread, members please give us ideas on how you want the club's money spent.

Another idea is just stop charging for membership! Although the membership fee is nothing compared to the knowledge gained from others in the club and I think every member of the club has benefited at least 2Xs over the membership fee; Why even have it? or a treasury. Just a thought.

I've got the money to spare every year, but what if others who consider going the club but the thought of spending another $25 (?) bucks seems ridiculous since they have their LFS to "guide them" anyhow... If I didn't know the advantages, there's no way I'd pay it.

When I joined, I KNEW I didn't know how to do SW. And I knew the advantage of having the advise of others who've done it for yrs would more than pay for the entrance fee. Not all do, Not all have the extra cash, Not that we treat them otherwise on RC either so it's just "can they come to the meetings without being a 'member' ".

To clearly state my opinion, I'd rather have a larger club with no funds than a smaller club with a bank account. If we can grow with a yearly "fee" GREAT. But have we even tried the other way? Since this is all volunteer/and voted leadership what's the money for anyhow?

I am not a member, but do you guys not get club discounts for being a part of the club? If so doesn't that offset your club fees for the year?

Being part of the club also allows you to come set up at frag swaps and make money as well.

Being part of the club lets you get in on group buys too, btw. We had a guy join last week so he could participate in the snail group buy.

I think it's ridiculous to suggest getting rid of the dues honestly. We do actually do some stuff with the funds plus how do you expect the club to grow and start doing all these things that have been suggested like frag swaps and group buys, if there are no funds available. We don't have 500 members like MTRC so it takes a few years worth of dues before we build up enough of a base to even be able to think about doing that kind of stuff. That's the only reason we haven't done anything with the money so far.

The dues of the first two years members wouldn't even have been able to rent a place to hold the frag swap.

If you want to suggestion doing something with the money, then fine, the board members should meet and talk about it. To suggest that we just stop having dues is a good way in my view to disband the club.

Do you really think that paying $24 a year keeps a ton of people away from the club? hah hah.

Also paying a fee kinda makes you feel more a part and gives you stock in the club. granted $24 is not that much a year, but it does make some people feel like they have something vested that way they care for the club more.
