Ahh, okay. Is the skimmer gravity fed or pump fed?

Nick

It is fed by a MAG5 pump. There is not enough water going into the sump to supply the skimmer AND sump.

The powerhead in sump keeps detritus in suspension until the corals eat them or the skimmer pulls them out.

After adding the powerhead there is now no detritus build up and the tank is testing out better when it comes to Po4 and No3.

As an added plus, I no longer have to siphon the sump. :D
Nice this is exactly man plan for today after work.

Okay.....

Not wanting to get into a debate of BB vs DSB.....

but where does this detritus go when it gets sucked back into the display, after the powerhead kicks it up, and the skimmer doesnt get it?

I believe my skimmer is catching most of it. My skimmer has really been working i hard lately pulling all sorts of things out. My sand is pretty clean so its not landing there. I use a turkey baster every two day on my rock work to make sure detritus stays in suspension.

Okay,
obviously its working, because you have a beautiful aquarium.

Thanks for answering...

couple of questions for ya sunnyx.

how do you think the constelation would do over a 48x24x24 sps dominated tank?

what bulb combo would u suggest for more of a 15k-20k look.

and how did you decide on ati bulbs over geissmen or uri.

Hello,

My tank is 48"x24"x20" so its not far off from your dimensions. The constellation is working great so far. My colors are getting better and coral growth is great .

A good, blue color combo would be:

5xBlue+
2xAquablue Special

I decided on ATi bulbs from recommendations from many of the European reefers I have spoken to. The bulbs have good track record so I figured I couldn't go wrong.

Next time I replace my bulbs I am going to switch out the pro color for a Fiji Purple and one of the Aquablue's for a Blue+ .

Oh, and I just wanted to let you guys know that I created a new website yesterday with some basic info on my aquarium. You can find it here: http://rimlessreef.weebly.com/

Sonny,

I thought you were using a Phosban reactor with rowaphos to get rid of the algae problem you had.

Sonny,

I thought you were using a Phosban reactor with rowaphos to get rid of the algae problem you had.

I am running a phosban reactor with a small amount of RowaPHOS. I have a minor issue with Dinoflagelates that I have been able to keep under control so far, but need to get rid of it completely.

I had Dino's many years ago when I was first getting into the hobby and it nearly wiped my tank out.

Because of my past experiences with Dino's I have decided to increase my dose of Prodibio Biodigest. Along with the increased dosage of bacteria I have started dosing Vodka.

I started with 0.5 ml yesterday and will follow the dosing instruction in this article: http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2008-08/nftt/

I am hoping that by feeding another form of bacteria it will out compete the Dino's for food.

Like I said, the Dino's are not that bad right now, only enough to annoy me, but they need to be wiped out before they can get a foothold.

Nice set up, are the T-5's giving you better color than the metal halides you had on your 225?

Well, looking over the the majority of my corals I would have to say that yes, my corals are looking colorful. I cant compare them to the old tank yet, still need more time to grow. Although, I do get the feeling that my corals may in fact be getting too much light. Many of the corals have lighted up but I think its too early to know if it from the lighting or over skimming.

I am happy so far with T5's. The growth has been great and color is getting better day by day.

Sonny be careful w/ the vodka. i tried it about a month ago and i lost my tubs horrida and it burnt my shawn bennett yellow tort and my purple death Efflo. They are still both recovering.

I followed the directions to the "T" and my alk was only like 8.5

I gaveit up because it was causing more harm than good. Good luck with it and just keep an eye out on the Tips!

Just read through all 19 pages! Love the setup so far.
I'll look forward to pictures of the tank when you put in the fiji purple bulb. I'm running 2x250w Phoenix Bulbs with two crappy actinics. I'm hoping to get a Blue+ and a KZ Purple for Christmas to swap them out. I'm excited to see how they work in conjunction with the phoenix halides.

BTW, that blasto is gorgeous!!!
