Sorry if this is the wrong forum..... is Gorgonian a SPS? Or its on type of coral.

Just picked up some Yellow Finger Gorgonian..... the guy at LFS neglicted to tell me that its life span isnt that much. A year or so.

Is it possible to frag when its close to death and created a NEW coral that will live a year or so?

I believe that all gorgonians are octocorals, so the soft coral forum would probably be the correct forum.
The most likely reason for the gorgonians short lifespan in captivity is lack of food (the coral is probably not symbiotic). Starvation will take place regardless of colony size, so fragging a starving coral will not help it.
I would try feeding it frozen cyclopeeze. If that does not work, then you can try phyto or other foods for filter feeders. I know that some of the reefers in my area propigate similar corals, feeding just phyto and whatever the coral can find in the water column.
