After 3 yrs or so of being a moocher, I finally decided spring for the $25 or so to join RC. I gotta say, It's definately worth the money, to get access to the search function. The search function works all of the time, and I have info at my fingertips all of the time. And, I support the site.

Don't know why you would go to all of this effort to circumvent the RC sytem, so just cough up the $25. You'll be glad you did.

Having to pay to search a site is a joke.

You failed to mention that you tried 5 searches yesterday and that 3 of them were successful.

;)

I bet I've had a lot of successful searches lately, but an overhwhelming majority of them are as a result of searching my past posts. I won't get into much else as I've already tackled this subject in the past. Other than I think it would greatly benefit all the users on this site if you guys can figure out how to make the search accesible to everyone and less limiting as far as terms go. I don't know one way or another if that is one of RC's goals or not.

Had it not been for all the work that's been going on those searches likely wouldn't have worked. As I pointed out in the other thread, you can also search older threads, with much fewer restrictions, on the archive site: http://archive.reefcentral.com/forums

Cheers

when 2000+ users are logged in at the same time and then the server or servers are asked to search - it limits the capabilities of everyone not using the search function. So i can understand why it is limited. by using the google search we are using google's servers to search the RC site thus not bogging down the performance for those of us who just like to banter and B.S. like we are doing now. :)

I doubt that RC will be making changes in the near future. I think for the most part people are happy with what they get from here and there really is no need to change it. I just like to reference things on a more frequent basis than I am allowed when I am logged in. Like I said, I intend on paying my membership just cause, but first I need to pay my rent, for gas, grad school, hopefully an engagement ring.... and the list continues.

I appreciate what is done around here and there is a lot of untapped information that just sits in the depths of this sites databases. I just want everyone to be able to tap it. With Mucho's recent commentary thread a lot of folks brought up the fact that they couldn't search and that bugged me.

Anyway, I just hope people are learning and having fun around here. And on that note, I am leaving work finally and going home to have a beer. I hope all of you can do the same, or whatever it is you enjoy doing.

In all my time on RC I've never had a search for my own posts be denied unless there was some sort of error which just seems to happen randomly when I'm doing various things. I'm not worried about the search much for myself, just for other memebrs and especially people newer to the hobby. Perhaps a sticky to that archive link and the google search at the top of some or all of the forums would be helpful.

We've got two years worth of threads "live." Right now the archives go from Jan 08 right back to the beginning.

the only problem i find is that if you get the "search function is not available" page, there is no archive link. it is only available when the search page actually comes up.
It would be helpful if this link came up even when the search page didnt show. then there would be no need for a workaround.

Best $25.00 I have spent, supporting the continuation of the site is important and I am happy to pay...I pay for my magazine subscriptions and only get the information printed....here I pay $25 a year and get sooooo much information!
