Soulpatch's build thread (ongoing)

Yeah, I went to go take a look at lightroom last night, but couldn't justify the price ($150 or $10/month). I tried GIMP but I want to be able to import NEF from my camera, which apparently GIMP doesn't do natively, so I had to get some other non-GIMP non-Lightroom program called UFRaw, which actually isn't bad, but I'm basically on my own since it doesn't sound like many people in the RC photography forum use it.

I just refuse to bite the bullet and buy $150 software.

The wife wanted it so I bought it. The lightroom is great for post processing if you shoot in raw mode I am finding but it gets overly technical very fast. I am not an expert and you almost have to be to use it.

The $10 a month option does also include Photoshop which is nice. We might be going that route here shortly just to have both programs and the ability to access both on our mobile devices.

I by no means support piracy, but.....

150$ for software is a ripoff!!!!

Ever think of looking for the software in a torrent(its there in full form with either a code for activation, or a cracked full version).

Again, I in no way condone piracy.

I've been looking into purchasing some acans, they just seem way over priced to me. Question though, what are their light requirements? Will my stock biocube lighting be enough for a few weeks until I get the puck ordered and installed. I only ask because I'm going to a frag swap on saturday, and if there is a couple there I like, I would love to be able to purchase a couple.

Yea, Adobe products are expensive, but they're also the best, and you probably get what you pay for. If you think $150 for the consumer versions are expensive, I dare you to look at corporate level pricing.

I'm trying to grow out of piracy... It was cool as a kid or a student with a small job and not a lot of money, but I owe it to the world to try to buy things legitimately now that I'm fortunate enough that I can afford them. Somewhere someone has to feed their family with some of that money. I buy used where I can to save money, and where I can't, sometimes you have to bite the bullet or find an alternative. I found GIMP and UFRaw, so if I need a free program those are there.

As per the acans, you should be fine with stock lighting. They're not very demanding as far as light goes, and as long as you have a plan for lights in the near future, you should be good.

I dont mind paying for something that I see use in. The amount of pictures we take makes sense to buy programs and the wife wanted it so she got it. I mean really the 150 was the same cost as my two clown fish so not really a ripoff for what it does.

Yes stock is fine. Odd thing about acans is that they actually like it a bit cooler to grow. I keep mine around 79 still and they grow well but probbly not as fast as if i lowered temp. It is a fine balance though as my other things like it warmer.

Well did a large water change today reverting back to Reef Crystals so will see how it goes. I am hoping it reverses some of my issues. I will test the water tomorrow and potentially do another change if my numbers are not spot on. Also had to zap some more algae while I was in there.

Did you manage any pics with the gopro? I have a 3+ for mountain biking and find it doesnt focus all that well for underwater pics. Video is good though

Yea I'm curious to see how it goes. I have one too, I tried looking in the photography forum to see if it was done, but didn't find any hits. You can use the remote too.

I have an older one without the remote. The case might be in my race trailer but I have yet to look. I have the cam in my truck though.

I need to ask my LFS what he uses as his pics are awesome...

No it is some waterproof camera. Casio perhaps. I dont remember but will ask when there this week. I used it for those last 2 shots from his shop so nothing else was used to enhance them. But his tanks have better overhead lighting tuned to bring out the colors as he isnt going for growth necessarily like we are.

couple pics taken before cleaning and right after feeding the tank yesterday so there is a ton of stuff in the water/sand that you can see in the pics. I will try to get the gopro or the dslr out this week for proper pics.

Blue leg hermit:

Astera snail:

Brain moving food into its mouth:

Hermit cleaning my mushroom:

My maxima - He was barely open but realized I didnt have any pics of him and you can at least tell the colors he has in this (orange and a sort of purple/black) Colors are more vivid in person though.:

Probably my favorite fish since he greets me daily and has personality:

Noticed last night that my goby has some fin damage. Something is nipping at him but I am unsure as to what it is. Could be anything as I have never seen aggression in the tank at this point. I will just have to keep an eye on everything in there...

Looking good soul!

Nearly picked up a maxima yesterday from the LFS, but decided to wait for a while till I get my tank "sorted" with new lights, apex, ATO, and mp10's.

Yeah, you don't want to get a clam acclimated to power compacts (A. it probably won't so it won't do well, B. you'll have to put it at the absolute top of your rockwork and have to move that rock to the bottom when you add LEDs).

Clams require a commitment. I've noticed that mine is finally starting to grow (you can check by seeing how much white is at the top of the shell, i.e. new growth, under the mantle, when it is retracted).

I started with two maximas, one just wasn't happy anywhere in the tank, kept moving itself and burying itself under my rocks (yes, it would dig out the sand under a rock and slide itself in), and was never happy, and one day wasn't there anymore, just two empty shell halves :( ). The other is, well, happy as a clam, at the bottom of the tank in the sand bed. Doesn't even mind the angel swimming over/near it every minute or two. No bleaching, decent coloration. IME clams can be finnicky, so be prepared for the worst, but do your best to make them happy.

Yeah mine hated the rocks and has been happy on the sand bed. I havent seen too much growth yet as it is still fairly new in the tank. Perhaps 3 weeks. He tolerates the goby chilling next to him in the sand though at this point. Those two are buds.

BRS actually posted a pic yesterday on FB where they had a file fish nipping at a clam so the clam shut on the fish killing it. Never thought that would happen but it was interesting to see...
