sound in the tank

I was talking to a fellow reefer the other day and he was wondering if all the noise from the powerheads in our tanks affect the fish and coral in any way?

Anyone with thoughts or info on this? Are we driving are fish crazy with sound?

Thanks

From what little research I've seen on the subject, if it's not loud enough to annoy you, it's not bothering the fish. The ocean is noisy place, so it also stands to reason. Even the loud whine of a boat passing overhead does not seem to cause fish to take notice.

Ha, interesting. I had this same thought today when I had my head inside my stand and heard my wavemaker coming on and off.

Now that I'm in my office where I have such notes, here is the best paper I know of on the subject.

Having done sound levels reading in the lab and made the comparisons to this paper, the average hobbyist is not likely to hit high enough decibel levels in their tank to be a practical issue ;)
