Sound proofing stand?

Im currently cycling my 60 gallon which is in my room and there is alot noise coming from under the stand. The Wet dry filter makes more noise than the return pump. I was thinking about trying to sound proof the stand to reduce the noise. Has anybody ever done this before?

Havent done it but I plan to use the left over Dynamat from my car to quiet everything down. Dynamat is used in high end car stereo systems to keep all the outside noise out and all the insude noise in. Its a sound deadning material that comes in sheets that remind me off the stuff that gouse underneath carpets.

I also saw in a movie that eggcartons cut in half and glued all over the walls was a "ghetto" way to sound proof a room but you cant really believe what you see in movies.

Dynamat is a waste of time. Egg cartons are also a waste of time.

Dynamat is primarily for low fequency damping and comes in several forms. In esssence it is asphalt based material that damps the resonances of whatever it is stuck to. The problem is that it's damping characteristics are focused in the high energy bass region. In other words it is to keep your quarter panels from vibrating with your sub woofers.

Egg cartons are pretty much sonically transparent and will do little but take up room.

The best noise absorbing material for our purposes would be melamine foam. You can get this from most industrial suppliers or sound proofing companies. There is also very EXPENSIVE foam used in aircraft manufacturing, but expect to pay big bucks for that.

People are misguided in thinking that all "foam" absorbs sound. Instead the opposite is true, most foam products absorb very limited bands of sound.

Guess my Dynamat is going on ebay ... thats for the info. I was going to tackle that project this weekend too.

YUp PE is a good company to deal with. newbie... the dynamat will not hurt anything, but it works much better a damping low frew vibration :)

Just curious why you are running a wet/dry, presumably with bioballs. They tend to be nitrate traps. You might want to replace the bioballs with live rock rubble and eliminate the trickle feature.

Do you think the insulation that is put on your house when its getting vinyl sided would work at all? It comes in all thicknesses and you can get it any size.
