sounds like Tropical Aquarium is going

My son just called and it sounds like Hector is going to close the store.

I am real sorry to hear this or anyone else loosing their lively hood

That stinks... I talked to him a couple months ago and he said business had picked up lately. I was hoping he would be able to increase the inventory of livestock but from what he said the suppliers raised their prices so he had to follow suit in order to stay afloat. You can see the same trends in other stores too.
It would be cool if he can still make it work.

Best of luck to ya Hector.

i work in retail and the inflation is really starting to creep in from the suppliers thing came down a little after christmas but are acclerating up again...

Tell me about it. My shop took a big hit with supplies we order. It litterally jumped up 30% if not more. Our customers were very understanding that we had to raise their price to offset our cost. And the fact that our competitor closed shop and they basically had no where else to go within a 10 mile radius :). Our economy suck right now and everyone is feeling it. Heard a lot of good things about Hector, sorry to see him go.

Sad that a person, business who would give honest advise is going under. Nothing against any of the other stores in the area but was nice to go somewhere that if he thought something else would suit your tank better he would give you the suggestion.

That's what happens when you print money with nothing to back it.

He could open one on the east side of Cleveland. He'd have no competition.

That is what I have been saying for years. I am tired of driving all the way to Vermilion.

This is a brutal environment for entrenched retail. Definitely difficult for a start up like Hector. I am always sorry to see things like this happen. Sure would be nice to see something pop up on the eastside. Hmmm, maybe I'll quit my job, lol.

its SOOOOO hard ,, the big 3 in Lorain County have been around for years , AT , Salty , Best in Pets. Best in pets would have been gone long ago if it were a fish only store like the other 2. Greg at best and pets has a pet store that sells fish too , but i would bet the saltwater fish is not where his money comes from ,,, if your going to be a saltwater fish & coral only store in a strip mall type building , it has to be hard with rent even in the older smaller places has to be expensive !!! i wish Hector the best ....... Dan is in a good way out there where hes at , he has the Reputation already in place and a great costumer following that seems to just keep coming back .

When I went to the Feb. meeting, I asked Kevin why all the talk was about Salty & AT. Why didn't they mention Hector's place? (I figured there were people that never heard of Tropical Aquarium.) I was told that he didn't support the club.

Hector has offered in the past to support the club.

Personally, I found it hard to tell people to go check it out when he usually carried little or no inventory. Several times I popped in when I was in the area to find his entire saltwater section completely empty and awaiting a shipment. Since its an hour drive, I stopped going altogether.

I know inventory costs money, however, if I want to special order items, I can have them shipped to my house via online retailers. I am not knocking Hector, however, I think this is one of the reasons he didn't build a large following.
