Southern Guy's 270 Advance Acrylic Build

Yea lots of mixed reviews on Bio pellets for sure. I have been running biopellets for 2 years now. I have always had zero n and p. I do feed lightly though. So I'd say they are effective but not necessarily a miracle product like some claim. Lots of varied experiences with them it seems. I have always used Warner Marine EcoBak pellets.
Just got the same reactor, haven't had a chance to use it yet. (still building tank) Talked to Eddie at CadLights and he says the Two Little Fishes bio pellets are the ones that make the movement like the video. By the way GREAT build!!!!!!

Understood. No miracle cure in this hobby but good husbandry is deploying the use of several mechanisms and frequent testing. Currently my Ns/Ps both are 0 but just trying to plan for the future and a bit torn between carbon dosing and building a DIY 3D ATS scrubber with LEDs for lighting.

Absolutely. Could not agree more. Many ways to skin this cat we call reefing. ATS looks cool if you have the room and time for maintenance. Been seeing some pretty good feedback and results. Let me know if you go that route and maybe post up some how to's on it. I think we as a community need to do that more. Thanks for sticking along on this one.

Cool. Yea it was a bit smaller than I expected. A little disappointed I didnt get that Mummy sand dune effect. haha. Good info on the pellets though. May get up enough courage to give those a shot next time around. hard to change whats not broke you know. Thanks for the compliments too bud.

Lighting Update...

I had been going back and forth on lighting for months. I could write pages and pages about all the research and thoughts I had, but I will try and keep it as short as possible. I have been running exclusively LEDs for over 2 years in a mixed reef with great success. I had 2 BWB what people call "Chinese LED" fixtures and 2 AI sols over my 180. Believe it or not those Chinese fixtures put out some serious light and par (yes I measured) with great spread.

Moving onto this build, I wanted to do an all in one LED fixture that was nice and enclosed and could be hung over the tank for aesthetics. Unfortunately, hard to find a 6 footer that I liked that didnt cost over $5 grand. So I then started to think about a floating canopy. My inspiration actually came from this build here...

http://www.neptuneaquatics.com/cont...-display-tank?cck_pager_field_gallery_image=8

I called it a bit of a reverse canopy, since it is finished underneath and all. I think it looks amazing. I will be doing something very similar but will be finishing it all the way up to my ceiling. More details on the floating canopy and skin to come. So back to the lighting choice. I then started thing about how many more Ai SOLS I would need to get the coverage and it got a little expensive for tech that I knew would be replaced quickly, and already has by the AI Vega.

I then started researching more of the worlds best SPS tanks since that is my new direction and focus and most were running halides with 20k Radium bulbs. So since I could not make up my mind between all LEDs and all halides again. I DID BOTH. I landed on 2 x 250 watt 20k Radium bulbs, fired by 2 new LuxCore adjustable ballasts by CoralVue (as they have a 250 HQI setting to properly run these bulbs), and 2 x LumenMax Elite reflectors. From Sanjays testing these were the best reflectors for my tank and use. Not the prettiest but very effective, but wont natter now because they will be covered. Not that I am growing money, but a few bucks more in electricity and yearly bulb changes were actually secondary on my list of concerns with this one. I want to create the best looking and aesthetically pleasing reef I could.

IMG_0249.jpg

These halides will be straddled by 2 AI SOL super blues on either end and a new AI Vega color in the middle. The cool thing is the 3 AIs will give enough coverage to light the tank leading up until the halides kick on, then they will be tuned down to match the color temperature of the halides. I felt it was necessary to add back the halides (that I swore I never would go back to) because the LEDs did grow the heck out of some coral (namely zoas), I felt they lacked the color enhancing properties in the red and purple corals. Green and others were great. Just my experience. Don't hang me. Don't want to turn this into an LED versus halide and spectrum discussion. Trust me, I have read hundreds of threads and thousands of pages on this already.

Back to topic. So while I have been waiting to figure who was going to do my skin and canopy (now resolved) I wanted to get the framework mocked up and hung so I could make sure it would achieve my goals. I went with a hanging canopy that is 14" off the water to get proper spread and penetration for both haildes and AIs while at the same time allowing the most important thing to me... ACCESS. I also decided to mount this floating canopy on pocket door rails so that I could slide it back and forth if I needed the extra room. Found some studs and a pocket door kit and got to work...

Made a few mistakes along the way with what to suspend it with...

IMG_0329.jpg

IMG_0330.jpg

Those were a pain and didn't allow for adjustments, so I then went chains and did the final mock up and made my cuts...

Been running this rig for a couple weeks now and boy am I satisfied. Being only 250 watters, heat is a non issue. No chiller needed. They produce a great crisp blue color even for 20ks. Reds have come back with a furry and my tricolor is coloring up well with blue and purple tips. The LEDs are a nice offset and controllable feature that I love. Just waiting for my Vega to arrive to stick in the middle (9th in pre-order line). If it looks good, Ill prolly upgrade my 2 SOLs on the ends. However they look just great right now.

Also picked up an Apogee MQ-200 par meter as well. I figure hobbyist spend thousands on lighting, hours and hours debating par and effectiveness, debates over lights useful life and par shifts. Why not spend a little on a meter and monitor yourself and get truly accurate coral placement. I love having it so far.

So that is where I am at on lighting. Thanks for checking in and following along. I am super excited because I finally found a builder to do my skin and canopy. More details to follow on that.

Apologies for not having updated this thread in a while. I have been going absolutely bonkers stocking this thing up with livestock and some nicer sps frags. Ill have an update with lots of pics coming soon.

Here is a long overdue update. Picked up a new Avast K2 Kalk reactor to help balance the ph after finally hooking up my GEO calcium reactor. This is the first time in over 2 years my water chemistry has been "in line" with proper levels. I also painted my Avast grey Swabbie white to match the rest of the equipment. Came out pretty good I think actually.

thanks aqua. totally unnecessary, but gotta stay busy somehow. always tinkering...thanks for following along

Love your build! I am planning a new system and I'm curious how well your tank came out with no center brace? Did you have to use extra thick acrylic? What thickness is the sides and top?
Thanks,
paul

Amazing update and thanks for sharing. Looks great and is coming along quickly!

Thanks Dustin. Feels like it's taking forever to get it where I want it. With that, I finally have a good scape and plenty of frags to watch grow in. Should be fun.

Thanks for following along. What size is your next build?
As far as the eurobrace, it is wonderful! A rimless would be great if I didnt have my hands in the tank so much. I would be splashing water over the sides daily. Heard thats the main trade off. I would never have another tank with a center brace though. So annoying and so glad I went eurobraced. Maintenance, fiddling, catching fish, everything is just so much better. for reference, my acrylic is 3/4" thick.

wow amazing tank!

Thanks for the compliment Kody.

krjackso,
Thanks for the quick reply. My next build will be an upgrade from my 240 gal mixed reef. Right now I am planning to build a 60" x 60" x 25" tall acrylic tank (~400g). I have built about 10 acrylic tanks before including several half cylinders, although I have never tried to build a tank without a center brace. I was planning on using some acrylic sheets I have already, 1/2 inch for the sides and 3/8 for the top and bottom. I know this will work if I use a center brace but not sure if it is thick enough to go without.
Your tank looks beautiful and I love the external overflow!

Outstanding job. What a great read. Did you ever consider setting up an auto water change system?

Btw. Great call on the lighting combo

so FINALLY time for an UPDATE!!!

so excited to be posting these words. Well after another 7 months of ANOTHER contractor wasting my time (I must just have the worst luck, who knows), I finally have something to report. My stand skin is finally underway! May not seem like much, but to me and especially the lady friend, it finally is marking a bit of progress to finishing this build up. My tank has been sitting on a steel frame for quite a while unskinned. Much to the dismay of my girlfriend. Any hoot, the stand will be skinned by John Ferris with FBN Woodworks. Nothing but great things to say so far.

The stand will be a modern look, very similar to some things you have seen already. Clean lines and modern ish looking. It will be Red Oak hardwood framed. I really fell in love with the grain and look of the Red Oak while shopping around, as I was literally 1 day away from doing this myself before FBN joined the boards. So here are some progress pics. It will be stained a dark/ espresso/ redish color and satin clear coat finished when its all finished up.

You will notice that I have abandoned the suspended canopy idea. As it turns out, I need my lights a lot lower to the tank than originally planned for optimal growth with all these colored sticks. The canopy would have been a monstrosity reaching all the way to the ceiling so I opted for a traditional top but will still make a movable light rack on ball bearing drawer slides to get access when needed (might need your help John).

As far as livestock and equipment goes, no major changes. Added a bunch of wrasses (new addiction) and a few new sps. As always, thanks for following along. Hopefully it wont be another 8 months before I am back with another update.

My wife might have poured bleach in my tank after 7 months:) Glad to hear and sure it will look great. Have any design pics?
