Spar Varnish??

I have some ACE Hardware brand spar varnish I was using on some woodwork on my boat. Is this safe to use to stain a custom canopy for my reef tank?

i used helmsman's spar varnish on my canopy. no problems here.
should be ok given sufficient time to dry and cure.

SPAR is exactly what you should use actually.

Just make sure you use a couple of coats and sand between them. Will make for a very durable finish.

What is the purpose of sanding between coats?

You have to sand between coats so that the next layer will have proper adhesion.

sanding between coats leads to a nicer finish, u should go with like a 180 to 220 grit. the finer you go with the sanding , the smoother the finish will be. tack cloth in between coats
