I recently am at the end (I hope) of what I consider an odd occurrence I wonder if anybody else out there has noticed similar things. I had for lack of better words a "Species Specific Catastrophe." I lost all my Acropora solitaryensis in one foul swoop. (I may still be able to salvage a couple frags of each but time will tell.)
I have AEFW. I baste/blast, I have wrasses I keep them in check. Some how though I missed or wasn't blasting well enough on the under side of my large soli's and while siphoning out my sand the other week I overturned into to find a more AEFW then I've seen in my tank in a very long time. I was initially going to just blast them off but gave it some thought and went against my better judgment and dipped the piece.
Thinking
A) Solis are rather hardy.
B) It seems to only be isolated to this piece (whenever they show up 99% of the time do on this one acro).
So I dipped it needless to say that was a bad idea. That acro quickly started to STN/RTN over the next couple days. What makes the event odd is shortly after that Soli started to STN, another Soli without any signs of infestation that wasn't dipped started to STN as well, as did another piece on the other side of the tank, and 4th frag (very slowly which seems to have stopped it was the only captive piece of the 4).
However none of my Acropora Efflorence, or other "unknown" tabling acros let alone any other Acropora in my tank have showed any signs or issues (luckily). What makes it even stranger is none of the corals that I did loose showed any signs of issue where specific damage to the piece wasn't being displayed. Meaning I had full PE/Colour until the creeping death dislodged the flesh from the bone. I tried fragging up one of the efflos and gluing/or cutting far away from the necrosis then moving them to the frag tank.. no luck. Tried lightly re-dipping a few pieces, nothing. A couple very large water changes, replacing my filter socks and even replenishing my carbon but It wasn't putting a stop to what had already been set in motion.
I jut find it so odd that for the most part* only the the same species was effected none of these were new additions ranging from close to a year to 6 months or so in my system. My parameters have stayed steady and acceptable during the majority of the event. I'm not doing any sort of carbon dosing, or adding any additives to my tank that could cause some sort of bacteria out break.
For the sake of full disclosure
The following week I did have some side causalities a very touchy plana that has always done the STN-Clip-Grow back dance, and a stag that has been acting strange on me for the past month which I managed to frag and save most of. For the most part I'm chalking these 2 up to just the increased nutrients in the tank, and the resulting alk swing when the demand dropped off due to loosing essentially 1.5'-2' of acropora in about 80 gallons of water.
So with that.. Why just solis?! Has anybody else had anything similar happen to them?
