species tanks

hey I know I'm getting way ahead of myself, but just like almost everyone else here I want more haha... anyway I'm upgrading my 55 to a 135g soon and was thinking about after that project setting up some sort of species tank....

so can anyone give me their opinions on some ineteresting species set ups? I will definately take time to read up on everything so don't worry about me getting into something too fast :)

Lionfish are pretty awsome. I've never owned one personally, but my biology class in high school had one. Pretty slick to watch eat.

if your doing a species tank get an octopus!!!! i've had a few and they are the coolest thing ever! they interact with you and everything! i had one that ate out of my hand. and he would play with my hand too. i hope to get another when i have an extra tank. you should really look into getting one.

If I had a species tank I would set up an octopus tank. I have come across a few that only get between 1-2" big and some that are like a softball. I forget the names. I think that would be so cool to have.

yeah I have always loved lionfish as well, the frogfish seemed pretty cool too....I've always been interested in critters that are very unique.... I've found cuttlefish to be very interesting, but I do not think I am ready to get myself into something that expensive and complicated

what size tank would it be? the 55g? if so then you could get a bimac or a hummelincki. bimacs have been known to be the best pets but i've had hummelincki and it was really interactive also.

My main problem with the cephs though, is they generally have pretty short lifespans. Not sure about octopus, but I know cuttles usually only live 1-2 years :(

i thought the same thing but there not that expensive and i thought they were pretty easy to take care of. you can get an octo for about 60 bucks.

my octo tank was pretty simple. less expensive than my reef. just have good filtration and some live rock and there you go. and make sure the lid is tight so it can't get out.

It won't be the 55g, that is going to be my sump for my 135g... I'm not sure how large it can be with the limited space I have in the room I want it in.... my guess would be a 30-(maybe)50g

James, I had an aggressive tank with lions, triggers, and an eel. It was a trip at feeding time with all the snapping and popping. My lion would spit at my hand with his head halfway out when I held a silversides above the tank.

that would definately be one of my dream tanks lol, but I don't think I could find the room for a tank large enough....

Guy I work with has a tricked out 125 fowlr aggressive tank. Triggers and a big bad voltais lionfish. He's shown me video of feeding time... scary :-p Actually got bit by one of the triggers a couple months ago to.

if you had a 30g you could go with a hummelincki octo! pm if you have any questions about them. i really think you should go with an octo if you want something diff. and really cool!

hey with a large enough tank would you be able to keep all of the above + some sort of puffer and angelfish?

I've been thinking about that for about a month now lol
