Spendin' da Moneyz!

Man the body and the lens is a tough decision! I'd really like the full frame so I'd get less noise and my 24-70 will get the full range out of it.

I would only offer, if youre still undecided, that I personally would get the glass... It's shelf-life is longer, and give your current glass, either of those choices pushes you into other styles of shooting... I'd go with the wide-angle, i love forcing myself to shoot with it and expanding my style...

Expand your shooting repertoire with different glass, get some new and energizing shots in the can... the 30d is still a great camera and you can do a lot with it.

Basically a new body means you will still be limited to your current shooting situations/styles but the images will be better quality...

New glass means you still have the same limitations in quality, but you'll be able to shoot way more styles of photos, now and for years to come...

Just my 2 cents... Your millage may vary.

Question...

Whats wrong with the 5DM2 kit? Don't want that lens?
For that same amount of money is there a better option of body and lens for the 5DM2?

I'm about to buy this camera as well, and don't have any prior lenses, so I figured the kit was a great place to start, unless there is another option that would have me spend just as much as the kit?

Where do you plan on your purchase?

Good advice although I just had to take 5 pictures for my class tomorrow and maybe I need to rethink that I need to learn how to use my camera (again). Maybe it's because there is nothing real artistic in my backyard to take a picture of.

Not really satisfied at all with what I took haha, but the teacher won't care.

You have to dig deep into your creative mind, there is plenty of artistic shots to be taken in your back yard if you open your eye to it...let the artist flow...think of the different close ups and angles etc...think outside the shot.

The "kit" lens with the 5DMII is the 24-105 f/4L There isn't anything wrong with it. It's a really nice lens.

Thanks Doug. But if I chose to get the body only, is there another option at lens that would keep the costs about the same as the kit? What kind of lens would that be? I know this is a good walk around lens, but wondered about other options...?

I picked the 24-70 f/2.8 over the 24-105 f/4 IS. I'll take speed over IS any day, especially in that focal range. Nothing against the 24-105, I just like taking pictures of things that move fast, like standing behind the umpire at a baseball game shooting the batter. The IS is cool for long exposures but...If the exposure is that long I'm using a tripod anyway. I can handhold the 24-70 effectively at 1/30 across the zoom range without IS. The 24-70 f/2.8 and the 24-105 f/4 IS are two powerhouse lenses that everyone has to choose one over the other.

Ok, so that is good information. Which of the two is probably better for my reef aquarium shots, and of my newborn, and other close up type shooting? Would the price be close to the kit if I got the 24-70 f/2.8?

The 24-70 is a little pricier. It can make your shutter move twice as fast as 24-105, which is golden for fast moving tangs. The wider aperture also does a better job of blurring the background, isolating your subject. For these reasons I would say the 24-70 is better for aquariums (fish). It is easily one of the top fish lenses money can buy.

The 24-70 is better at closeups in every category...but neither are good. For that you need a macro lens. 180mm f/3.5, 100mm f/2.8, MP-E 65mm, ect. ect. but a different lens all together. Neither one of these lenses are for corals. They are both good with fish, and the 24-70 is a lot better with fish.

For your newborn I would put them at a dead heat. With the IS of the 24-105 and a dark room, I might even give the edge to it. Who shoots baby pictures with a tripod? Still either would be the perfect lens. You should get a good speed light anyway for creative lighting.

It took me months to pick one over the other lol. I knew EXACTLY what I was buying, why I was buying it, and why I wasn't buying anything else though. Take your time. You are only going to do this once.

I'm kind of stuck at the price point of $3500, thats the max I told my wife the camera and lens would be...so body and the 24-70 looks like its more $3800...over the agreed budget.

Unless there are some competitive prices out there for the body and lens of your choice?

Well they are selling the 5DmkII and 24-105 together as a package deal with a little discount so they can sell more 24-105's. That is where you are getting your $3500.

Right, I understand that. I guess thats the only lens at a discount? No way to get the body at $2600 and a lens like you mentioned on sale?

5DmkII body only
$2,699.95
24-105 only
$1,059.00
Total
$3,758.95

5DmkII and 24-105 package deal
$ 3,499.95
24-70 only
$1,190.00
Extra cost of 24-70 compared to 24-105
$131
Extra cost of 24-70 and 5DmkII compared to 24-105 and 5DmkII
$390

They want you to buy the 24-105, and will give you a discount if you buy it with the 5DmkII. Everyone else will snatch up the 24-70.

No these lenses are the best of the best and everyone knows it. You could find a nice used one for 80-90% cost. If I was patient I could sell mine at 90% I'm sure. If I was desperate for cash (as many are in this current situation) I could sell it fast for 80%.

I shoot with the 24-70L and love it. I do think a little longer would be nice but don't know if I could handle the extra weight :)

at least the body is nice and small ;)

That's why I have the 24-70 f/2.8 AND 70-200 f/2.8 IS :D
71-105mm is a wash for me because I have it at f/2.8 and IS with the twist of a lens. And that lens matches my 24-70 in every respect...it's just longer. The 24-70 matches the 70-200 as well...it's just shorter. Ahh the good life. I do think the 70-200 wins the focus speed race though. They are both super fast so it's all gravy.

Yeah, TS, I ALMOST feel sorry for you...

The 24-70L will be mine in a little over a month. Dan, if I had known you had the 24-70L, I might have asked if I could check it out for a day or two. Don't worry, your probably safe, unless you wouldn't mind bringing it to the meeting this Friday? You don't have to actually let me borrow it. Just looking and maybe touching would probably be enough... :)

Mwuhahahaha
I love the 24-70, but the 24-105 is a super duper lens in its own right. Its like North Carolina and Michigan State at the NCAA...no bad example Michigan trailed 17 points.

Its like Canon and Nikon. They both have their strengths and weaknesses, but they are both top dogs. Just pick the one that tailors to your shooting style.

If I was shooting landscapes all the time, I would be absolutely be fine with the 24-105. I'm a sports and fast mover man though...I want to freeze the action. The 24-70 is worth the premium for me.

Seriously though I think every really serious Canon shooter should have
A) one of these two lenses^
B) one of the four 70-200's
which you get depends on your personal style. You can't really loose with any of them. If you are a prime lens overlord you may not get any of them...so not every serious Canon shooter...but you get the idea.

I think most of my shots will be more moving stuff right now, or semi moving and tank shots etc...So the 24-70 is sounding good, maybe I buy the body new and a used lens somewhere?
