Spiney Box fish

Is this considered a type of puffer or box fish? Also, if it is a type of puffer would it be compatable with a Porcupine Puffer? LFS has one and its pretty neat looking and I'm very interested in it as long as it will work. If its a bad mix I'll just leave him where he is. Thanks for the help.

If I am not mistaken puffers can be quite aggressive while boxfish are more peaceful and have the ability to nuke your tank if they are stressed. I don't know if it would be a good idea to mix. This is just what I hve read and heard , i have actually never kept either of the two species.

If you're talking about Chilomycterus antillarium, I believe its grouped in with the puffers. They're less aggressive than a porcupine, but they get big, are not reef safe and may nip at other fish. They will NOT nuke the tank if injured or dead.

I guess its a puffer. LA has them listed as Spiny Box Puffers. Would it go well with a porc or will I be left with one or zero at the end?

If this ID is right, it's neither a puffer nor a boxfish. It's a burrfish. They are closely related to porcupinefishes. Puffers belong to the family tetraodontidae, while porcupinefishes and burrfishes belong to the family diodontidae. The burrfishes can puff though (they belong to the same order as puffers). They can't release toxins into the water, as a real boxfish can. They are difficult to keep, as they are difficult to make eat the food we like to give them. They are very prone to internal parasites, and need regularily deworming. They get large, so you need a large tank to keep one.

Chilomycterus schoepfi or Chilomycterus antillarium are burrfish, as Troender stated. I have a schoepfi and love it. So much personality and one of the coolest looking fish I know. They are closely related to puffers as you can see in my thread http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1989976.

How big is your tank?

I have one in a 120gl with a Cowfish but I had to separate them with a divider due to the Cowfish's aggression. I think it all depends on the Porcupine Puffer as to whether or not they would be compatible. You have to factor in age, tank size, etc. My Cowfish is just too old and set in its ways to share its tank

I'm just going to just leave him at the LFS. Don't want to cramp out the 3 fish I have by adding another one that will turn into a monster. Thanks for the help.
