I have a mated pair of splendid mandarins, they are awesome, very fat, healthy and do a mating dance every evening. Because the tank is big enough I added a pair of target mandarins. But, the males can't stand each other, they fight, chase each other when they meet... Is this normal? They can't be kept togheter even in a 450 gallon tank?

It is absolutely normal for two male mandarins to fight (whether spotted or green) but...admittedly, I'm a little surprised that you're having a problem in such a huge system.

HOWEVER, I usually tell people that their tanks will be a lot happier if they don't break the rules just because the system is large.

I never knew mandarins fought. I know males do, but other species too?
They only fight when they meet, offcourse this isn't often but I would prefer them to live peacefully wich each other

Mandarins (as I'm sure you're learning) can be REALLY mean to each other...chasing each other around and nipping. They're very territorial.

Maybe they'll forge separate areas of the tank as their own but I doubt it. I hope you are able to figure something out though!

How long has this been going on? Maybe they will work out their territories? Are they actually hurting each other? Does either pair interfere with the other at mating time? Maybe you can find out what their normal territories are in the wild, that might be useful.

I would think in the wild they must have territory skirmishes - it's just a matter of whether or not you have enough for both, I'd think.

I have the targets for a few weeks now. They have also gotten fat and bold, since they didnt fight in the beginning. I have two strong males now and they dont like each other. I havent seen them interfering with each other during mating rituals. They dont really hurt each other because they have enough room to flee when needed.

Well I certainly have no experience with 2 mandarin pairs in one tank. But what I would do is give it some time and then decide whether the fish seem to be under undue stress. OR decide whether I want complete peace in the tank.

And I would try and hunt down info about their territories in the wild.
