splitting anemone?

i have a couple questions about anemones.

1. how/why does an anemone split?

2. lets say you have a small anemone, and you feed it as required. will the anemone quit growing in reference to the size of the tank? or will he keep growing regardless? lets say you have a small tank, and you want to keep him proportioned to the size tank you have, can you control this or does the question "Why would you even want to?" pop up?

If they get too big for the tank, it will usually split. If you try to control its size with food, it will go down hill.

They will also split do to stress, temp swing, water chemistry, new or old lighting, and many other reasons.

It would depend on what the cause was. Some will split from a large water change. It's not a bad thing, it just caused enough stress to make them split.

if they split due to stress, is this a terrible thing?
Just thought I'd chime in.
if they split due to stress it is because they are unhappy and are going to die unless they are tanken care of better. It is cloning itself to try and ensure survival i would not want my anemone to split due to stress allot of the time they split and then one half dies or both because it is hard to heal from a split so they need to be healthy

Not necessarily true. This is not usually the case.
