i have been wondering about keeping sponges for awhile. i really want to but i hear it can be hard. has anyone had success with this and can tell me how. I know a little about them. like they can be hard to feed. do not let them be exposed to air. stuff like that but i do not know how they do in fish tanks

sponge are filter feeders and require light target feeding i say light because most people over do it , stability in the tank is also a +

As ihavtats29 said, they are filter feeders but one important element that they need to grow is silica. Its fundamental to their structure. I have used Korallen-Zutch Sponge Power and lately Brightwell SpongExcel. They are both very good. Most sponges require medium water flow and medium to low light intensity (the blue/purple colored ones generally prefer medium to high).

It also depends on the type of sponge, some are more affected by air than others.
The only sponge I actually added to my tank intentionally was a purple plate sponge, and mine has definitely done better in lower light, no spot feed, and one frag I had came pretty close to dying after accidentally being intro'd to air, but it did make it.
I just assume all are affected by air, and treat accordingly.
