sponge encrustation taking over coral

Hopefully someone has had this experience, and can share their
solution. I have a large Xenia, 6" x 12" that's being overtaken by a common sponge. The sponge completely covers the polyps of the coral, and is choking it out. I've exposed the whole piece to air for 10 minutes, with no results. Is there anything I can do to eliminate the sponge? It's difficult to pick off pieces without damaging the xenia.

Pics? sounds cool. Some people use Xenia for nutrient export. They are weeds keep the sponge.

I remove all sponges. I had some thing and it was taking over zoos and shrooms. They can live out of the water for awhile. Removeing rock and heavy brush off with fresh water dip.Try and remove all holes or mouths seen.
