sponge filter for QT

I'm going to a sponge filter for my QT tank, and I just wondered how long will the sponges take in my sump to get enough bacteria to put it in the QT? I've had them in for a week now.

I asked the same a few months ago and was told 3 to 4 weeks.

I've also got a coarse sponge (that doesn't go with the sponge filter) that has been in there for a couple of months. Can I toss it in the QT loose just to get the bacteria, or should I just wait until the sponges are ready?
