Don't get rid of them they are amazing for water clairity imo. If you have them it means there is food for them to eat. They are helping keeping your tank clean and balanced.
Why? They are harmless (and beneficial) filter feeders. Their population will wax and wane with their food supply. My overflows and sump are full of them.
