spongeing diy skimmer

I'm makeing a DIY Skimmer for my 2 1/2 dwarf seahorse tank. Its a typical PVC with airblock type Skimmer. I had some old sponges from my jbj and cut a round disk to fit in the bottom. My theory Is it will help from sucking up any ponies. Does this make sense? I can post a pic if you need.
