sponges and metal halide

Hi Richard,
My package is still thriving well. I will be upgrading soon to a metal halide fixture (150W) and I was wondering if the purple sponge that you send with the package should be placed lower in the tank?

Also, my little corals that are on the rocks have started to bleach and are not opening, will the MH help?

Hard to say what will happen.....if things change, change locations of the sponges.....your corals, are you feeding them?

I'll keep a eye on the sponge then.

As for the corals, yes I'm feeding cyclopeeze and DT plankton. The gorgonians that you sent are thriving well but it's just the tube corals that are not doing well...In fact, I think I only saw them open once...

Hmmm dunno, as they are very hardy corals....ask here in the forum....as all my customers get them!

It's been my experiences that both sponges and those brown tube coral clusters prefer lower light conditions. I'm pretty sure most sponges are 100% filter feeders and really require very little light, and most of my best looking tube corals are in the darkest parts of my tanks.

same here, seems like the small tube corals like low light.

the cup corals seems to not care.

the gorgonians will adpat to more light.

some of the sponges seem to like low light, but I have some black sponge that's in direct light at the bottom of a 90 that seems to be growing.

My cup corals are not only thriving, but spreading. I sometimes target feed them with mysis. I take a medicine/eye dropper and suck in some mysis then put a little on each cup. It is cool to see them expand and take in the mysis. When really healthy and under actinic light they will actually fluoresce a little green.

It's been a few weeks now under the metal halide...
The gorgonian is really growing a lot!! It is really happy!
My cup coral have come back to life too!! I'm really happy! I've never seen them like that since I got the rocks. both the ones at the bottom and top of the tank are doing better!
The sponge is doing good too. it is slowly expanding on the rock it is attached too.
Metal halide are great!

I'm also planning another system (for my sister in Montreal) and I wanted to know if shipping at the end of march to Syracuse or Burlington would be OK or you would recommend to wait that the weather becomes warmer...

Good work keeping you tank happy!

Both of those airports work......and yes it is very cold....up there, of course you knew that!

I even had to break out a jacket today....

Both airports involve a connecting flight, but should get there same day.....may be best to wait for a little warmer weather!

Either feast or famine up your way it seems....was just watching the news from NY, is 12 there, but the wind is gusting 25-30 knots so feels real cold....the whole northeast is getting frozen....

I have had a week of no diving because of high winds and small craft warnings....and it does not look good in the forecast either.....but the good news is two more months of this winter weather and March comes... and we start warming up again!
