Sponges bad for Reef Tank?

I just noticed a sponge like growth next to my mushrooms it's white and porous about 1 inch tall and half inch across. Almost looks like a piece of bleached out birdsnest or similar type coral except it's soft when i poke it. It's growing pretty fast and I'm just wondering if I can leave it be or is it detrimental to my corals or other inhabitants? Will try and get a pic but my point and shoot doesn't take that great of macro pics.

here's a picture

You could easily leave it, but if for aesthetic reasons you wanted to remove it, you could do that too. I would personally take it off.

I personally consider sponges to be one of the most interesting and beautiful group of animals you can get for your reef aquarium

They are beneficial too as they filter out DOM and bacteria from the water column.
