Sponges-concerned??

My tank has been running since 11/2006. I'm starting to see a few sponges (8 at last count) on two of my rocks that seem to be growing quite a bit. The smallest is the size of a pencil eraser and the largest is the the size of a nickel and growing. They are milky white/beige in color and some appear to have green vein's. Last night I noticed a couple of the larger ones appear to have very small tentacles. It's my understanding that sponges are good for your tank; should I be concerned because the number is growing and the exsiting ones are getting bigger?

I'll give this thread a bump.

I have something similar to this happening in my tank that has been up since mid January and I'm curious about this as well.

do any of them look like the sponges below?

Yep that sound like sponges but a pic would help. Nothing to worry about, unless of course you dont like sponge's. I like the non-photosynthetic sponges that grow on the underside of rocks. They help keep the rocks from moving or falling. :D

I like sponges too, although some aren't that pretty. I've got a nice yellowish green sponge growing on some rock beneath a large monti cap. I believe they feed on excess organics in the water column, so they are generally good for your tank.

they are interesting and they come and go. They help stick your LR together :D

the only thing bad I ever had a sponge do was grow under some mushrooms and made them hop off.

Actually the ones that I got from my TBS shippment ( orange, reds, browns ) Tunicates and sea squirts are all thriving and growing in my tank... been feeding them live phyto and zooplankton suppliments.
