Sporadic power outages

Nor sure how you wired the furnace Allen, but I added a receptable below my switch and fuse that are right at the furnace. I installed a cord with a plug on it to the furnace, that way if I have to do this again it will only be a matter of unplugging the furnace from the wall and plugging it into the cord from the generator.

Hey Billy, thats a really good idea, and much simpler than what I had planned on doing, I'll make a trip to True Value tonight;). Sounds like their is more fun weather on the way this week:rolleyes:

My wife put the kybosh to a standby gen set,
allwise wanted one. natural gas powered.
But I guess she is right may go forever with out needing it.
But a good portable is shure a good idea.
This summer has me worried also. I had the AC trip it's breaker last year only was 2 hrs before i got home but still was 90+.

Let her sit in a dark cold house for a few days, she might loosen up a bit on the idea.

Not sure if you will have a problem with your furnace, but depending on how it is set up you may need to ground the neutral wire from the generator to a good earth ground to get it to work properly. I had to work on my neighbors heater Sunday, I found that it would not work with the floating ground of the gen set. Mine worked fine without it, but his Lennox unit did not like the ground until we tied it to the earth ground.

This is my "Little" ups that I have the tank on....

75984UPS-small.JPG

it is a APC 2200 with an extra battery....

since I installed it I have been goign to do a "stress test" but have yet to see how long things will run.
I figure between it and the AC3 controller shutting down all non esential Items I should have a few hours of runtime for a pump or two.

Luckly the power in Pella just flickered a few times I didnt loose power completly for any duration

but every time I heard all the UPSs in the house BEEP my heart would stop ..

but it is not all good in Pella , My truck has a huge dent where a tree branch decided to land, and my roomates Jeep is worse it has the rest of the tree ..

ahhh well ...

Does anyone now which APC are safe to run a pump off of?

I heard some of them burn out pumps pretty quick.

The best way to analyze one would be using an oscilloscope on it and watch the output to check for consistency, nice sinusoidal waveform, and proper frequency. If there is one you are looking at in particular we can go to the store and test them on battery power, I have a scope here at the house.

if I remember right

any of the "Smart" UPSs give a true SINE wave ( as aposed to a half sign or step wave)

and that is really what you want for motors I beleive....

Pretty sure your right. You certainly are correct about the step wave and sine wave.

btw. has anyone heard on bob's tank? I heard he was on vacation during the power outages... and I am worried one of the most artful tanks in the state [and his work] is dead....

Hi everyone. From what I understand my tank is fine. I had a friend of mine go over to my house and plug in a heater and a powerhead into an inverter. He stayed ther the whole time the power was out....4pm-2pm the next day. I owe him bigtime....he is not even a fishguy. Eric then went over to give me the damage report and he said that eveything looked fine. I could not believe it. I guess even the stuff in my frag tank downstairs is ok even without anything. From the looks of the news it looks like we are going to get more today. Hope not for everyone still recovering.

Anyway...I will let everyone know how it all looks when we get home from vacation on Saturday. I had better get going and get my sunscreen on. It was 84 degrees here in Florida yesterday. I got sunburnt...sorry...had to rub it in :).

"i got sunburnt" that's just not right.

Have you no soul!!!!

Enjoy the rest of you vacation, glad to hear your tank is fine!

All i know is my wife isn't whinning no more about the 400.00 generator i bought last summer to go racing/camping no more, after she woke up Sunday with no power. I quickly hooked it into the house. It ran my refrigerator,furnace,2-300watt heaters, skimmer, mag 18 pump,60 inch t.v. + satelite recv. and believe it or not with snow on the ground my sump pump.Luckily my furnace and sump pump came on at different times. Pending on how your house is wired takes about 10 minutes to get hooked up..
