sps 1250 gallon system

Sounds great. I just added a 55 gallon drum filled with rock that rises from bottom to top slowly ie crytic zone. Its that green garbage bin in equip room. So far i see novdifference. Thought maybe nitrates would drop without me using more vinegar vodka. But valve turn water changes are the best. Good luck. Lets see oics when done, rick

Ya Andrew, my last two barrels with rock will be a crytic set up. All feeds enter the top of the barrows, then I have pipes sending the water to the bottoms, so they all have up flow from the bottoms to the tops and into the next barrow. My first two barrels are the ones I empty weekly for 100gal water changes. I use vinegar also. Where in your system do you dose? Right now I dose in my sump, but I'm thinking of moving to barrel #3 my first rock barrel?---Rick

Since my dosing has not worked yet im not sure im guy to ask. Butbwe have been splitting it from main tank by the overflow and the sump. Im very frustrated with this process. But i think after about 9 months im closer to the dose i need. Im at 65 ml of vodka equiv. i hope i dont need 100ml and another few months.

Right now I'm dosing in one of my sump compartments(after the skimmer) I dose vinegar and am happy with the results. I dose +-320ml over a 24hr period. I went with dosages @ R.Farley & Tom (TMZ), playing with the amount to find the sweet spot for my system. Your only dosing 65 ml? How often? Maybe vodka dosing is different than vinegar. I have been using vinegar over a year now. My DT is in my family room which gets a lot of natural sun light, I was always battling algae on my glass. I used to have a big problem, which is why I have my rock "cooking" in the basement. Might had to do with my heavy feeding, but no algae problem right now.
Andrew what are those other tanks in your equipment room? They your quarantine tanks?---Rick

65 ml of vodka is 520 equiv of vinegar. My size system i have room still for double. Have to go slow otherwise i stn Those tanks are frag and extra tanks onr is for cheto and i keep smaller fish. One is hospital qt.

Rick. Whats your gallon total ? Heavy fish load? Btw im going 75 per vodka dosed in am once. And 25 per vinegar dosed 3x per day. Until i find the right dose. Then ill automate it. Ive been going up almost 9 months. Its ridic. I should havpe just got load of pellets in reactor
And would have been done. Im going up like.50 ml per day of vodka. I think before im done i will be near 100 ml which would be 800 ml of vinegar. My nitrates are running around 10 ppms.

Right now I'm at 700gal until I get the 4 55gal barrels in line. Like I said I have all my rock in my basement in tubs, getting rid of a bad phosphate problem. I use to have a lot of bigger fish. I was into to large puffers. They had cool personalities, but I misewell been keeping hogs. Triggers, angles, squirrels, pork, tangs, ect. ect. Now I only have a few fish in the tank. It looks empty. I'm planning on running pellets when I get everything together and before I start buying corals. Again I'm following how to advice from Darryl (Dvanacker) thread.
I might start a thread on my set up when I get everything ready. I think I have thought through a lot of the issues I had when I first set up the tank.

How old is your tank? You have any early pics. Looking at a tank with nice coral is great, but I'm one of those guys that likes to go behind the wall and see what makes things tick. Can't wait to see your new build.---Rick

this tank is 2 years but so much of coral came from a tank that was 4 years before that if i dont see no3 down soon at 75r to 90 ml i give up and maybe assume too much dsb and too many fish to go lower by the time i get to the right dose ill be moving

with gfo or not ? sometimws i run double gfo and change every 2 weeks alternating if that then i can get it dn to .o5 ish if i run single then as long as im under .1 most of time im satisfied and ive been letting it creep up here or slightly higher to make sure i have enough po4 for no3 removal if i remove the gfo it creeps up to .15 to .2

honestly at least half the time i change gfo i can see a stressed out coral stn there is something not right with gfo in our tanks especially when light is nuts ans some nutrients coral go from insane colored up to see ya ive had enough sometimes also with a new carbon change also i swear sometimes the double halide bulbs in each reflector is too much light with all the supplental t5 adnd vho also

Hey guys, sounds like the barrel idea is a lot like a sand and gravel filter used by pond enthusiast. Might want to check that out. My buddy uses two of them on his pond. They work great for that application. He flushes them weekly AKA water change. I know there is The Pond Forum, it would be an excellent source for that info. Good luck and look forward to seeing how this all works out for you.

Im reading this thread now. Sort of wild causing a chemical reaction. Sounds like sulfur reactors. Lots of downside possible. Why dont people rotate multiple gfo reactors more often. ? Then again. Sps def get stressed out from gfo sometimes. Would be nice to know if it was the actual po4 removal or something else. If someone told me i would have less stn episodes it would be worth it
