sps 1250 gallon system

I would have to rate this system in the "Totally Wicked" category!! I can't believe I've just stumbled on this thread now for I'm searching for stuff like this daily. I was saddened earlier this year when Jawsee tore his display down...it was one of my all time favorites but I now have a replacement! I have tried sps in the past and never had a very successful experience but after viewing your display I have renewed hope! It's obvious you have the knack of sps and I may have to hire you when I get the new tank set up! :lmao: Excellent work and keep the videos and picture coming...I'll be anxiously waiting!!:bounce3::bounce3::bounce3::bounce2::bounce2::bounce1::bounce1::bounce1:

Thx tom. Appreciate that. Rick i run uv. A massive one. 400 w on main pump return We retrofitted a viper with titanium lining so bulb doesnt eat through the plastic. Which happens! More than once. Rick i just keeps water clearer. If we shut off, we see clarity go dn and corals will bleach out after turning on.

Very interesting Andrew. I know some guys with coral tanks don't seem to use them, but guys with large fish loads do. Its interesting that they effect your corals when you return them after being off. I didn't know they helped with clarity also. I have 3 Aquanetics 40w that I was debating on using. I can tie them all together, but it adds up to only 120w of uv total. Sounds like nothing compared to your 400 watts. Rick

Yes rick. But mine has to be super powerful cause speed going through is almost a one hp pump. Slower f
Low through less watts is probably better

Btw. One of things i think about with vodka and vinegar is whether im killing bacteria in water column that i need to attach to substrate to reduce no3

Thats why i shut uv dn for few days last month. To see if no3 came dn. it did not. When i turned uv back on ,tank just looked better

Just one last point on 2 bulbs per reflector. Given now that these select a watt ballasts like lumatek or galaxy exist, it rally gives you the ability to hook up 2 400s , one of each 400 and 250 ,or ,2 250 s with all the same connections.

I'm reading about your viper. I didn't know it was by Aqua. I'll read some more to get a better feel on what I have. I'll feed my three 40w's I have from one of my return manifolds, so I'll be able to run as fast or slow as I want.

I have my vinegar dosing into some live rock in my sump right now, but I'm going to move it to one of my barrows with the live rock in it (criptic) when I get it all set up. I think that is how Tom suggests to do

Just pour it into barrel? Mine gets fed reverse flow from sump so if i do thst just goes out drain. Would have to dose in sump near power head.

On mine I will have 4 barrels, inline from DT. The DT flows to first barrel through a filter sock then into second then into third and fourth. Both the third and fourth will have rock and from the forth the water goes through another filter sock and into the sump. They will all have bottom drains, of which I will drain barrels one and two weekly (+-100gal) for my water change. Theory also is, that most detritus will settle to the bottom of barrels one and two.. All of this works through gravity from the DT no pumps.---Rick

Hey Andrew, for your NEW build.

This is what a RC guy in Australia was thinking about using for his 2300G Cylinder Tank Build for flow.

JBHTwsy.jpg

It is a 171mm (6.7") internal diameter German-made ring thruster (used for steering small craft in tight situations). It should be reef safe and would be very versatile.
Here are the benefits:
It is bi-drectional, so I can switch directions to emulate tide
At ~450 RPM, it should consume about 200W and give me 57,000 GPH or 27x flow
From time to time I can crank it up to 1000RPM. This will consume 2,200W and move about 127,000GPH or 60x flow.
While the energy consuption at 1000RPM is excessive, it could be done for 20s every 3 minutes to emulate waves.
If it suits me, I could mount it on a rotator and have it sweep back and forth
It looks way cool

The down side is that it costs the same as 6 x Tunze 6305s... although it will move 20% more water at 30% less power than 6 Tunzes. It has been used before for aquaria in Deutschland, but is relatively unproven. I am unsure that a single point of flow is not worse than 6 points of flow, even if I get a decent gyre flow happening.

HERE IS HIS VIDEO OF HIS TANK --http://youtu.be/moqVsnQvGBQ

Later in his thread he said he did not choose that one. I thought it was funny the ideas guys come up with. Although you could see in his video the unit he did choose really had the water turning.

Yes, maybe it would help the bacteria attach to the rock a little easier as the vinegar is diluted and moves from barrel one to barrel three? Its kind of fun to think about this stuff!

macna

macna

We are pulling into macna !!!! Missing 3 parties at home but the mrs is cool about it. Better than trip with the guys to vegas she says !! Who's going

Wish I was! I love Lauderdale, always did a lunch and/or dinner at Sea Watch and checked out the go fasts and Hot Bod contests at Shooters back in the day.lol
I see Reef Raft has a booth, they have some pretty cool corals. You checking on anything in particular for the new build Andrew? Have a good time---Rick
