I think if you want to be able to try out other bulbs in the future the 175 watt is going to frustrate you. The AGA 40 is only 18 in high? If you go with a 20K 250's which is the way it looks like your leaning, you will like how the colors pop and wouldn't have to worry about photo-inhibition.
so you think that 2 250's will be ok, correct?

I had one 250 halide over my 40 breeder and hated it because it was a 3 foot tank and the ends were dark and the corals allways grew toward the center of the tank. I would honestly go 2 150 d/e halides. Two 250 is alot for a shallow tank and it is only 3' long so you have overlapping.. If it was a 4' tank two 250's would be fine but it would still be ok in your tank. Why are you opting out of the tek t-5... T-5 lighting to me is best for a 3' tank/odd length tanks. Provides a nice even coverage.

Dave
im not opting out the tek thats the middle tank lighting/ frag tank, and personally after having a 150 over a 10gallon and i dont think that 2 150's will be enough for a full blown sps tank.

Finished painting.

Any more comments are appreciated and any more ideas on the lights are also appreciated.

i just changed out my 250watt 14k aquaconnect too a 20k, because i don't have any supplement lighting and it's just a 30gal sps reef. but i love it so far it's the best way to get more color with one type of bulb.

Wow, neat setup, loving the plumbing! 2 x 250watt Reeflux 12000k and actinics would be a nice combo, combining PAR with good actinic colour. This will be one sweet setup no matter what though.

I use 2x 250w Reeflux 12k with 2x 39w T5 Actinics on a 58gal, which is just a 40breeder with maybe 2" of extra height.

suppressive I just picked up a 250w HQI ballast, and happen to have a 250w aquaconnect 14k sitting around. I will hook it up tomorrow and take pics for you. Then you can compare color to the iwasaki.

Here it is, I'm using PFO HQI ballast. It's very nice, not too blue, but stronger blue hue than the iwasaki for sure. Looks brighter in person, I would say equal to the Iwasaki (but 75w more too). Before this I tried a 175w Helios 20K bulb, don't go there. Very, very dim.

See thats awsome color, and for me I need a touch more blue which the vho will do. So you think 2 250's would be ok?
i wouldnt use a hqi ballast though just a ice cap or something.

I know I am dredging this up from the dead, but I thought this was a really unique idea. Any update on this tank/s?
