My tank is starting to look pretty good, except the valonia(bubble algea) is getting out of hand, how do I eliminate this stuff in my tank???
TIA, Josh
Valonia sp. will proliferate in nutrient rich water (common knowledge) but can also appear in low nutrient water. Ever since I setup my first tank I always had Valonia. IME what keeps it in check is this:
1. Aggressive skimming - as in wet skimmate;
2. Manual removal during water changes - make sure to get individual bubbles or clusters at their roots. If a few bubbles rupture - don't swept it - just use a syphon tube to suck 'em up;
3. Foxface Lo - 50/50 chance; if you get a small Foxface train it to accept vegetarian food like nori, etc (use Selcon and Kent's Garlic). Once it grows he/she might turn onto Valonia. Mine starting to nip at bubble algae.
I've had luck with Emerald crabs, but given there are a number of varieties of Mithrax sp. threads [all sold as emerald crabs] - experiences seem to be hit or miss.
