SPS and Faithfully Feeding

what's better for a system with a sump(skimmer in the sump)?
1. turn off return pump
or
2. turn off skimmer

for feeding

If you have the time........ for daily feeding to turn off your skimmer, return pump, remove your sponge guards..

Lets see how long you can last in such daily tasks.

Automation my friend ;) Simple 1/4"-1/2" solinoid on the skimmer air input, on a timer, would be suffice :D

Magma, I'd say your best bet it to kill the air. Save the wear and tare on your pumps for stuff like water changes :D Just crimp the air input tube.

That may depend on what type of skimmer you have. If I shut off the airflow to my ASM skimmer the water level immediately goes up and the skimmer overflows big time.

I use a relay box I built so that I can turn off the return and skimmer pumps in the back room with the push of a single button under the tank (or with the Aquacontroller) and the pumps then automatically come back on after a delay interval (the lenght of which which I can adjust). Right now I use it just for fish feeding and it is only 10 minutes because the fish eat so fast.

Then you have better start thinking automation on your return pumps too. Turning on and off frequently??? Bet you will have another problem soon.

To me, it doesnt matter much on shutting down your skimmer and return pumps while feeding. How much can it affect yoru wastage of your valuable feed? Think about such daily chore.. :strooper:

It's a mute point for me, I just feed daily and don't turn anything off  Belive me, 10+ years of this, I've thought about it ;)\

Only time my return pump is off, is for water changes :D

You requested automation my friend :D Check out my project ;)

Provided most can afford. Money can buy everything, including employing a maid to feed your fish too.

That is awesome i must say. my friend. Good work. I hope your pumps can stand your daily affair.

I think if you seriously dont have time to turn off a skimmer at night and remove a sponge...you are in the wrong hobby. It takes time and effort. If you dont want to put forth the effort...just keep sea monkeys or something.:)

I think you've miss understood what I'm saying. My (future) automation only turns off the air source for the skimmer for feeding. The pump (return) only goes off for water changes ;)

(Disclaimer - no pumps were damaged in the writting of this post)

My time is spent on looking and enjoying my reef tank rather than doing things that is not feasible. For your info, I do not own any sea monkeys, only lousy sps hard corals and sick fishes. I find sea monkey even harder to maintain alive :smokin:

Do what you like. Kudo to your hardworking effort. Nobody is stopping you. Pls let me know 2 years from now, if you are still doing it.. :mixed: I hope you are not a new reefer here who has this high level of excitement like myself before you. It only last me 1 month. I give you 6 months since I presume you are energetic and persistent. Keep up the good work.

Actually, I have been keeping reefs for over 12 years. You sound like a negative person...im sorry. No sense in arguing over a stupid topic. Im sure we will both go on enjoying our tanks regardless of which route we take.

Cheers.
