SPS and T5s only

What Ti said is from a relative point of view. Strictly speaking there does not exist any point source in the world.

Compared with T5HO, I agree MH is a point source. There is no doubt in it.

I don't have any MH bulbs anymore but I thought they had quartz tubes in them? If they do, then they are not point sources.

My Reefing buddy grows all his SPS corals under T5's. The colors of his corals are incredible compared to my Halides.

Look at all of the TOTMs with T5s.

I know some one who is growing a mostly SPS tank with only T5's. He's on here. duec22 is is handle, check out his tank.

If you looking for examples....this is my 55g wth 4x54w T5's.

ICECAP SLR's and DD aquablue and blue+ bulbs. As you can see all my SPS are doing great.

Not on decent reflectors, they arent.

Look at MH on Lumenarcs. Theres no point source going on there.

T5's and SPS

T5's and SPS

T5's work great for SPS cultivation. I'm running 4 39 watt tubes on a 30 gallon reef.and the acros are the best growers in my system. I chose them due to cost (purchase price and utility cost) and they produce less heat than MH....Jim Z.

I wasn't making a comparative statement. So like I said earlier, they aren't point sources but I know what you mean. But is there something wrong with them not being point sources?

And with most reflectors, from what I've seen in Sanjay's tests, most of the light emitted from the bulbs doesn't resemble a point source pattern either.

Guys, I think you are arguing semantics here.....MH in general are POINT SOURCE, otherwise you wouldnt be getting the shimmer like your getting. With a halide your essentially lighting a tank with a few small bulbs that emit the light from a few small single sources. With floursecents, the bulbs traverse the entire length of the tank and thus illuminate more evenly and do not cause shimmer lines because there are not super bright spots. I would assume of you had enough metal halides to stretch the length of the tank several times like florescents do, you would get no shimmer...just a guess though.

fine, you win :)

But the shimmer lines aren't only because of the MH's, you get shimmer lines because of ripples in the water combined with strong light. Turn off all off your pumps/powerheads and you shouldn't have shimmer lines. I've even seen faint shimmer lines from t5 bulbs.

A point source may refer to one of the following:

- a source of air pollution emissions which has one specific coordinate such as a stack.

- a source of light that is treated as having no physical extension.

- a source of noise pollution that emanates from a specific location (for example, not a roadway).

- a source in fluid flow, or in electrostatics.

- a source of water pollution coming from a single location, such as wastewater outfall.

- a source of wave action such as a stone thrown into water.

In general the energy or other emission of a point source will radiate in a circle or as a sphere.

Who cares point source or not......T5 works just as well as MH. They both have cons and pros....its just personal preference.
