SPS capable?

I have a 120 set up right now--

Downgrading to a 55 gal soon and wanting to go sps dominated.

Is it going to be possible with my setup scheme?
What else should I add? Bare in mind I'm in college folks...

I have a 2x250 + 1x150 Aqua Medic HQI fixture...all 20K bulbs

One Seio 820...two small pumps at around 300 gph ( 1400 gph total approx.)

CSS rated at 125 gallons will be on the 55

Sump with culerpa and chaeto, live rock

More flow up the 820 to two 1500s and should be cool to start with.....I think a chiller is as much standard equipment as a heater....but since winter is comming that could be put off until spring

I am still in school also....till may he he he....and no your pain....but still it doesn't stop me from justifying irrational purchases every month.

What will you do for ca/alk/mg supplementation? Do you have a reactor? 2 part?

I'd look into modding a few mj900s. That should really help things out.

You could probably leave out the 150w MH and go with 250w 10k bulbs instead.

I think your flow might be borderline ok as is. How many gph will your return pump be pushing? If it's around 600gph that would put you at appx. 36x turnover. I run 2400gph in a 36" tank [50x]and have essentially the same set up [ 2x250w, ASM, etc... ] Bigger is not necessarily better... better is better ...I agree 3 MH would be overkill.

i agree that your lighting will be overkill, your flow could use a bump, modded maxijets are cost conscious, two on a 55 would be plenty, you should check out randy's homemade two part, save you some money there.

i would advise against the 1500's, for their price you can buy the modded maxijets and have more flow and take up less space in the tank. a 1500 in a 55 is big, i have one in my 55g frag tank and wouldn't if it were a display. i also have a modded mj900 which puts out much more flow.

I am up to 67x turnover....and am a firm believer that more is better.....my growth has really increased since then.
