SPS colour, all over of just the areas directly exposed to light?

In my new tank the SPS corals are coloring up so well. :inlove: Pinks, greens, blue, etc are appearing on my SPS frags.

However, only the areas of the coral that is exposed directly to the light is colouring up. My tank still has excess nutrients because it is new (but the rocks and water came from a 1.5 year old established low nutrient tank). I think most of the nutrients are coming from the new sand bed.

In time, with reduced nutrients in the tank and the corals having fully adjusted to my tank, will the other areas of the corals colour up as well?

For example, my pink birdnest was never pink in my previous tank (was under 150w halide). Rather it was a light tan/perhaps with a tinge of pink. Now under the new lights in the new tank the upper surfaces of the pink birdnest has turned into the most intense pink colour. The pink colour is even present when the lights go off and is pink when I take the coral out the water.

But the underneath areas and the areas covered by branches above, are still brown. So it kinda looks funny at the moment. Will the other areas ever colour up?

Here is my build thread just so that you can see the details of my tank if needed:http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?p=18068168#post18068168

I've had the same issue and Ive had some pieces in my tank for 6 months now. Im also curious, but like fishieness said, it wont be the same.

well this is what I think, so it can be wrong.

I believe that flow is much more important than light, and it has shown to be true! if you have a good, waving flow around the coral, then underneat will look the same color, same fluorescence ... but only if your nutritions are low so the coral can show its true color.

I used to think SPS only have colors on tip, till I went low nutrition, then I figured I was wrong.
