i know sps coral need more flow. but exactly how much? im getting a 20 gallon tank soon to replace my 10 and want to focus on sps.

enough for the polyps on the base to be moving. But as the coral grows, more flow is needed. Instead, focus on turbulance of the flow so that water rushes in from all different directions in a sporatic way. That's they best kind. Most times, your SPS will tell you if it's getting enough flow or not

so if i have two pumps on either side of the tank flowing downward at eachother, that would be ok? i've got a 240gph and one thats 500gph (i think).

On a small tank like that get a sea swirl for the return then just pick up an MP10 or if you want to plan for later upgrade go ahead and get a MP40. Running an mp40 at a low power setting with a return would make for some happy sps in a 20 gallon tank!
I know they seem a little high priced but they are worth it for the happy coral!

do you need the return? (sea swirl) kinda confused on what it does. i don't have a sump or anything. i'm using a hang on protein skimmer and currently a bio wheel, witch will be taken out of the equation when i get the new tank. can I just get the MP10 and be ok? that looked like a good product.
also do you have to drill a hole in the tank for that to work? idk how keen i am on that idea.
