SPS growth patterns

So does it depend on the type of SPS as to how it likes to grow...about 1/2 of mine are growing nicely from the tips mostly but I do have another 1/2 that are really spreading at the base and putting a layer of 1/16" encrusting the rock. These are all varieties of acropora.

It kinda depends on when the coral feels stable imho.

Yes. Some need lots of base before they grow out and others not so much. Some like birdsnest do not encrust at all. I have one coral that encrusted several inches before it started to grow out.
