SPS Growth Question

Hi everyone !

In ideal tank conditions, what's an average growth rate for SPS corals? I've seen some beautiful monti caps online that are on sale for $80 for a 1" piece, and I was wondering how long it takes for it to become a nice swirling piece of monti?

Also, while on the topic of SPS growth, I have an acro that had one of its brances about a 1/8th of an inch away from a rock. Now about a month later that branch is touching the rock. Will it stop growing or will it find the path of least resistance and grow in a different direction? The base of the acro is glued to a rock, and I"m kinda worried that the branch will keep growing and pushing against the rock and knock the acro loose from the glue.

Thanks

caps can grow into huge pieces in like 6-9months :D And with most acros they like to encrust a base first then shoot up. I got this little purple tip valida it encrusted like crazy then it grew 4 branches now. But if it bumps into something it'll grow the other way, well atleast thats happend with me. hope that helps

All depends on your tank. For some reason my acros grow, but my 2" monti caps are still 2.25" after a year....

Same here, the caps that grow like weeds in other tanks are painfully slow for me. On the other hand, I've got milli's and acros that are doubling in size annually.

My experience with acro branches and rocks is this.......the branch will grow into the rock, will go through a phase of encrusting over the rock (much like the base encrusts), and then new branches will shoot out from that new encrusted part.

man, how come I'm not getting email notifications that people have replied to my thread?

anyways, I'm seeing this white part on one of the branches of my acro which I believe is a new branch trying to come out. I hope I'm right. I'll know I"m doing something right if it really is a new branch :)
