sps - High salinity

My refractometer has been on the blink for the last couple of weeks, until it got to the point where I was taking 3 readings and getting different results each time. I took it back to the shop and got a new one, well when I tested the water it was 1.029. I have a few different acros aswell as some softies, but there is one perticular acro that I bought for cheap as it was browning. Well I was hoping that it would colour up, it's been in the tank for about 2 months, but in the last two weeks its really started to colour up. Could this be linked to the high salinity?

mine do the opposite. i had a prob with mine too and the water was at 1.030. a number of sps browned out and the polyp extension was very bad.

I had the same results as you Sinder. I started to see some real nice bright tips developing on my acros and I figured I should test all parameters so I could see if there were any changes. Everything was right on but I was shocked to see that my salinity was between 1.029-1.030. My tank is all SPS with one LPS. I am slowly bringing the salinity back down but my PE was and is awsome and the colors have not faded. I am sure that when given time, SPS can adapt to very high salinity levels and still have great colors. Some of the saltiest reefs on the earth are between 1.031 and 1.032.

I think 1.028 is about the highest you would want to go...but your fish don't care for it that high. They like it alot lower, around 1.021, thats why they say keep it in the middle around 1.025 or so...

Its good to know that other people are seeing similar results, any other people noticing this? Are there many SPS people that keep their tanks at 1.028?
