sps near pineapple

anyone have trouble keeping sps close to pineapple corals? I have a large pineapple and have a couple of sps near by that are not doing so good. Coincidence??

If memory serves, a pineapple coral is a blasmusa welsi (spelling?), which is an LPS. If that's the case, your pineapple coral may be stinging your SPS.

Thanks Rick. I have a marine atlas that calls it a (favia stelligera) star coral, pineapple coral. I'm pretty sure it's a LPS

Yes, you probably don't see it because the stinging often happens when the lights are out. Pretty sure this is what's happening.

Agreed, depending on what "pineapple" coral is it could be sending out pretty long stingers at night. Can you share any pictures?

Favia can really reach out an touch things late at night (several inches in some cases)... move one or the others or the SPS will be done for some day IMO

I have a Favia sp. that I've seen extend sweepers out to 6"... it locked on to an Echinophyllia aspera and got it's @$$ handed to it though... lost 4 polyps in the corner of the frag before I even woke up the next day... and this was with the Echino being the coral that was attacked... it used the Favia's longer sweepers to send back death!! ZOT!!!

And on an SPS related note, Acropora millepora can be pretty nasty in the sting department with other SPS... knocked one into a Pocillopora while aquascaping and it burned off 2 tips on the Poci in no time... mille barely even slimed up due to the contact

Ok guys, got the pic up. The sps on the right is clearly bleaching and the one on the left is a lil sick also. Wife & i just talked about this and she has noticed long tenticals from the pineapple at night in the past, (takes care of that, hehe). I'm gonna move the pineapple to the bottom and hope the sps pull through. Thanks again everyone & happy holidays.

You might want to break off the dead areas to avoid spreading,
do it just into the living healthy flesh.
Bacteria will take out the rest of the coral if it is not fragged.
