SPS QT Tank setup

Hello all!

I was hoping to get some advice on my QT tank setup. Right now I have it setup much like my main tank just smaller. It has a skimmer, sand, peice of LR etc, but tearing it down and setting it back up is a huge pain and I was wondering if anyone does it like I'm thinking.

This would only host one or two frags at a time, and only for 3 weeks to give me time to dip 3 times before moving to the display.

I would like to have:
5-10 gallon tank
BB with no LR
LED light I'm currently using
500 GPH propeller Powerhead I'm currently using.

It has an autotopoff controlled by an aquacontroller - temp is controlled the same way.

When I get a frag, the tank would be filled with water from my main tank and turned on. I would have the light level lowish so I don't have to deal with allot of growth.

I would like to do weekly 50% water changes from the main tank.

I would like to not feed the SPS QT at all.

I don't care if the corals loose color in QT, I just want them to live through it.

Does anyone else run their QT this way with success? Or will this not work?

This setup sounds great to me. I QT all of my corals for 5-6 weeks. I just have a 20 gallon tank with 4 t5s, a heater and a power head. I've had good success getting frags through this system and yours sounds much better. I do frequent small water changes using water from my display.

sounds no fun breaking it down and setting back up every time a new frags comes in. I would be breaking it down and setting back every month lol If QT is mainly for SPS why not just set up the tank and stock it with some nice, lps, softies.
I have a 20g with LR, power head, HOB filter( which isn't needed but helps with detritus) and a DIY led light. My wife is much happier with QT now that she has a tank with Euphyllia

Thank you for the experience CFloor! I was hoping to hear that someone else kept a QT this way.

How often do you do water changes? About what percentage of the tank do you change?

Thank you!

Thanks for posting in dadummy! That's a great idea but my wife is worried about tanks taking over the house, and sees the QT as a third tank. For it to not be classified as a tank it needs to spend some time shut down.

Also, it would be one more thing to maintain and distract my energy from keeping the main tank looking nice. I only get frags every few months, and as the tank gets closer to full that will drop off sharply. Already I'm being very selective about the frags I get.

I get it man, a happy wife is a happy life lol I think mine gave in after seeing all the headaches I went through with AEFW. good luck with it, sounds like it will work, can always give it a run with a few frags from the display to see how it does
