SPS required lighting

I'm looking at starting to put some SPS acro's into my LPS tank. I just want to make sure i have enough lighting for them to do well. I have 3x150 MH and 4x96 PC's. I run my MH about 6 1/2 hours a day right now. I know most people are running atleast 250 MH on their tanks. Should i hold off on doing the SPS until i do an upgrade someday down the line?

Thanks for your help

My tank is 72"x 28" x 18" . I'm looking at putting them about 18" below the MH's or about 15" from the top of the tank. I would put them higher but my rock work doesn't go much higher than that in most areas..

I'd say that you should be ok but I would try to get them towards the top of the rocks and as close to directly under the halides as you can get while still keeping everything aesthetically pleasing.

+1, you should be just fine. I would be willing to bet you will be upgrading to 250s in the near future though. 150 is plenty to keep them alive however.

You can definitely keep sps under 150w halides. We in America tend to go high wattage to keep sps(they do have the best colors that way, typically), however if you look at alot of tank specs from Japan and even some in Europe smaller wattage bulbs are often used. I'll try to find the link, but I remember one tank that was breath taking. It was a 360 gallon lit with 8x70w halides, a couple SHO and several vho actinics. Of course all the acropora were at the top.

That said, I am a 250 fan, but that just goes with the fact I'm an acropora fan. My 80 gallon is lit with 2x150w halides and 2x130w actinics. My avatar is of a patch of superman montipora in the 80 that is 26" below the halides growing about .5" a month(radius, not diameter). I also just rescently had to move a purple stylo frag that was too close(pasteling-out) at about 16" from the bulb. Since moving it lower, it's deep lavender is returning.

Long story short, just watch your placement, and realize acroporas might not color up for you unless they are directly under the bulb as high as possible.

That's some great information. Is there any issues with mixing my tank between SPS and LPS. I have mostly LPS and Zoo's now. I was really trying to fill in the top of my tank. That's why i was leaning toward SPS. I know about the different flow requirements already so that shouldn't be an issue.

How does everyone get there Acro's so high in their tank? Is it because your rock work is just filled closer to the top. I have mine built up to about 2/3 high in the tank. I have mostly larger live rock. It seemed as i built higher that weren't as stable. Is is that you just need to use smaller rocks toward the top?

If i ran my PC longer would that also help with the SPS? I didn't know if that would help much or if just running the MH longer would help.
