I have a couple of SPS starting to STN base up, not sure whats the cause, im guessing its my parameters but not sure please let me know what you think.

75 gallon w/ 30 gallon sump; 6x54w ATI sunpower 8hr period.
Salinity: 1.024-1.026
PH: 7.8-8.2 (does not happen in one day it moves +-3 a day)
Phosphates: 0.04
Nitrates: 0
Calcium: 460
Mag: 1530
ALK: 8-10 (8 before w/c, 10 after w/c and slowly drops down to 8 by the next weekly w/c of 10%)

I have been fighting algae issues before and using bio pellets for many months and its finally working and algae is under control. I am also using 1/4 cup gfo and carbon in reactors changed weekly and I was doing 10% w/c twice a week to combat the algae problem.

I had some SPS died during the fight with algae but alot of the ones that didnt die had alot of growth and now the algae problem is gone. But now I am seeing those SPS that grew alot starting to STN as well could it be my parameters are fluctuating too much or am I stripping the water too much? I feed 2-3 times a day, mysis in the morning and pellets in the afternoon and night. Also there is great PE day and night from the SPS and im pretty sure there are no bugs as I dip everything and inspect before going into display.
 
I am now a firm believer that SPS need to be feed, is this something you do or do not? in many cases that i have seen and read about feeding stops this.

I think you're letting your alk fluctuate to much. It should be stable at a set number in my opinion. If it's 8 before a water change it should be pretty close to 8 afterwards. Letting it shoot up 2 dkh is to much.

Agreed. I think IO regular salt mixes much closer to 8dkh but you will have to add a bit a Ca because it's only about 400ppm if I recall. Or just do a couple smaller water changes a couple days apart.
 
How do you feed SPS? I do w/c with RC and i think thats why the alk goes to 10, I tested the RC alk and its like 12-13, which is high, but i didnt think 10% w/c would do much but I guess it does, any ideas how I can keep it more stable?
 
I think it's like any other animal. If it's good and healthy it can take a little off number's here and there but if it's running on empty then they affect it more severely. Keeping things stable helps remove a variable and that's the name of the game, that way when something is off you can figure it out quickly. There are succesful tanks on here with all kind of numbers, don't get hung up on ideals, watch the corals and stay in safe ranges but stable. Fish poo works great as food as well as some commercial products. Look at this issue of Coral, there is an article on feeding and foods.
 
im going to try to keep alk to around 8, i going to do smaller w/c, probably half of what i was doing so the alk dont move as much.
 
Sorry, I have to correct myself, it was not Coral magazine but Advanced aquarist magazine. The article is titled...Coral Feeding: an Overview. It is on the page that comes up this month. Hope this helps.
