SPS Tanks & Refugiums?

I use one

I use one. IMO, aside from a properly sized skimmer and ample flow, a WELL LIT refugium is the number one aid to successful SPS reefkeeping. It makes for a valuable sink for excess nutrients in the water.

so its number 3 then ??....???

im only messing with you. i have never run a fuge but if it works for you then it must work. i have only run a skimmer in my tank and its perfectly clean

I have a 20gallon fuge and my tank is 34 gallon, I have no filter socks. This allows many forms of food to make it's way into the main tank, which is loaded with pods, as is my fuge. I find the added benefit of the opposite light cycle to balance ph, the supplemental fish and coral feedings, and the nutrient uptake by the macro algae provide the stability that I feel I would not achieve with the smaller tank I have, the sps are very happy... Not a must, but a must for me...

I don't use one, but I would if I needed it. You have to have a problem for it to solve IMO. I have no excess N or P in the system, so I don't think that one would be all that effective in my case. I have used them with great success in my FO and mixed reefs where I fed a lot more.

I have three, all fully lit and full of rocks, frags, sand animals, several zones, works good as I feed my fish very heavy in the SPS portion of the system.

I am a big fan of refugiums. While not the main part of a filtration system (in most cases), I think it helps polish off the water and reduce what nutrients the rest of your system doesn't get to. I have always incorporated one into my systems. In fact my soft/lps tank is ONLY filtered by a 20 gallon refugium with nothing else but live rock. I will always run one on my tanks just because of my success when using one. I have not had nutrient issues on any of my systems either.

Of course a lot plays into a system's health, but I believe refugiums play a big part if setup properly and of decent size.
