What if I told you that there is a magic number, a ratio between flow and light and if you hit it just right within a few short years even a total new beginner to SW can have an SPS show tank that rivals any TOM? What if I said you can have all this for the low low price of 4 monthly instalments of $19.99!

Older members will recall that I have been working on figuring out this "magic ratio" for over 3 years now and have conducted several tests that have up to this time proven the theory well. I'm not ready to divulge the secret just yet, mainly because I am still trying to figure out how many Xs can be eliminated from the long list of potential X factors that could be responsible for the success in the trails. My new tank will however be the test bed for the past 3 years of data collection and if I am right about this anyone who wants an SPS tank will have no excuses anymore.

LOL There will be a cost, it will cost time, and equipment, it's taken a while and lot of dollars to test it this far and I believe Taz knows the results speak for themselves as he has seens the 2nd test tank in person. I have to be 100% sure that it works though before giving any directions or creating an actual regimen for others to follow. My tank will either prove or disprove it. In the meantime just know that there is about an 85% chance that I'm right and we will have a formula by next year at the latest. Unless Im wrong then we will have nothing but waisted time :(

I have to disagree with you on this one Ron, It is never wasted time when we learn something new. And right or wrong we learned something whether we learned what works or what doesn't isn't the issue when time is involved. If we learn anything then it isn't a waste.

By the way if this is the theory we discussed a few years back I think that you will find the system works.

How do you expect the chart to deal with light measurement? Will it be a certain WPG, PAR, or something completely different? I assume the flow will be rated at turnover rate.

You are right Mary, failure is still part of the learning process, I keep forgetting that.

Of course, everything I learned about successful SPS keeping originated with trying to decipher why your tank did so well Bruce. In those days only you and Matt could keep SPS colored up as well as growing to full size fast. Fast was the key, I could keep SPS but my growth rate was off and/or different.

Your tank was the first tank entered into the data base and it is the tank I measured all parameters against. My goal was and is to be able to create similar conditions that were in that tank. I know why I can not do that on my current tank, and I know I should be able to duplicate your tank on a much larger scale in the 210 if all goes as I hope.

If this works I will sit down and explain it all in detail and everyone who wants to give it a try can test it on his or her own accord. Of course by so doing you agree, like me, that you alone are responsible for any negative out comes or losses incurred.
 
So Bruce, back in the day... well earlier in the 2000's, what brand lighting did you use? specs please... also did you have you have a high or low organic load and what did it consist of? I mean was it foods or wastes..... Also what about you fish load? Another thing and I'm outta here.... did you keep alot of crabs or nearly none at all? thx

I was using a Sunlight Supply 2x250 DE light with 2x54 actinics. I had quite a few crabs in the tank.

Here are most of the specs.

Tank - 90 gallon AGA reef ready tank
Stand - DIY wood stand, directions from www.garf.org
Lights - Sunlight Supply Maristar - 2x250 hqi MH's and 2x54 t5 actinic
Sump/Refugium - DIY 29 gallon AGA
Pump - ViaAqua 4900 (about 600 gph after accounting for head pressure)
Skimmer - EuroReef 5-3
Water Circulation - Tunze stream (2 w/ multi controller)
Two 7" desk fans hooked to temp controller
Heater - 300 Watt and 150 Watt Visitherms
Temperature Controller - Ranco digital dual stage
Auto Top off system - Tunze Osmolator

That method is interesting carb, cool too I, but way different than this formula. Also unless you know what numbers you are looking for or you have a 90 gal AGA with a custom 29gal sump made exactly like Bruces was, there would be little point to re-create Bruces system and if you did in fact there is a probability that it just wont work. (I learned that the hard way years ago). In order to figure this out I needed a lot of data on highly successful systems. Here is a hint though, in this equation light intensity can have nothing to do with it or everything and although some have become almost industry standards product brand mean nothing here.
 
so 2 in the back for 30min then 2 on either side for 30min(at different heights) we shall see.... I'll burn up these pumps yet bygod... ;)
 
I just posted the link to support your theory of the importance of high flow. It had nothing to do with Lowcel's former tank because I know nothing about it other than what has been posted in this thread. Sounds like it was real nice.

I just think the Gyre is interesting because of the linear flow and how it goes against normal convention of chaotic random flow. I don't forsee myself using this method because I'm conservative but I thought it might of been of interest.
