Now I know what you're all thinking when you saw this thread title, but before you flame me let me explain. I have sps that thrive substantially under my metal halides in my 55 gallon. So I'm not an sps newbie, and I know they need substantial light.
However I'm looking at setting up a coral propagation tank, and this is my idea. The tank is 12 inches tall, and since I'm strapped on cash I want to use an existing fixture I have around the house. The fixture is a current sunpaq unit with two 65 watt bulbs. I want to run two 67k bulbs to get max growth, and i know softies and most lps will be fine.
The tricky thing is I'm knocking around the idea of trying sps in there too. I would place the sps on a frag rack only a few inches below the surface, so it's extremely close to the light. I'm not really worried about keeping parameters in check because I can do that. I'm only worried about the light.
I'm thinking that 130 watts of grow light, with no real depth to penetrate, should be plenty. I mean it will be right there. I however do want to see what others opinions are.
