Squamosa Died

My ORA blue tipped squamosa that I have had for 2 years just died today with no warning. It was open and beautiful, then it dropped its byssal yesterday. The only changes to the tank is that I started dosing aminos about 5 days ago. Could this have done it?? Everything else in the tank is great. I am totally bummed :(

Are you saying the byssal thread let go?

does it react to any hand motion?

How much Amino are you doseing (selcon)?

Byssal was completely off the clam, reacts to nothing and the mantle was sitting 3 inches into the shell. Its gone. I am dosing 1 ml of aminos per 50gallon as the instructions call for.

what's aminos and what's it for?

I still would like to know the answer to this...... :)

Havent heard many people use that. Should have just stuck with phyto and calc.

My deepest sympathies for the squamosa. I lost one too, it was about 8" when it laid to rest.

Im here for a hug if you need one!

Aminos, Yeasts, Vitamins, and Excess Minerals - can all have similar effects on the water. It binds to what the clams eat and therefore causes them (and other animals) to excrete more. This usually results in a larger spike in ammonia and harms the clam. This doesn't happen with all chemicals and usually won't happen with any of them unless the levels in the tank become too high.

Sorry that happened though.

Sorry to hear it. I lost my big squammy too. Amino acids are not necessary for your aquarium. One of the nicest tanks ive seen relies on good skimming and large water changes. Nothing is added except 2part b-ionic.
