I want to know how well a squamosa would do under VHO's? Here's the set-up...

40g breeder
all water parameters good
Calcium at 400
2 aquasun 95W
2 actinic 95W
4" dsb
50 lbs live rock
20g sump with 10 lbs LR and large amount of macro growing

This is the tank I will have set-up when I move back to California and wanted to know what the success rate people have had with squamosas under VHO.

Will also be using DT's.

You MAY be able to slip by, i personally dont have any experiance with this, but if you fed DT's everyday and put him on the top of the live rock...

I'm not saying you CAN do it, just what you'd have to do if you did do it.

You have a better chance of success since you're choosing to keep a squamosa with almost 400w of VHO light. They're one of the easier to keep clams in terms of light requirements. I had one for over 8 years, which turned into a monster! I gave it to a friend because it took up too much room in my tank.

My squamosa was a very tough clam.

You can keep almost any clam in that setup. I have a 38G with exactly the same lights over it. I have 7 clams total, 1 derasa, 1 squamosa, and 5 maxima (1 ultra grade). My clams (including maxima's) are growing even faster than my friends who keeps his under 250MH's in a 40G. I have not been brave enough to try a crocea yet but you have plenty of light for squamosa's, derasa's and maxima's. Keep in mind there is more to keeping clams that light though. ;)

You will be just fine with a Squamosa under that light, IMO.

400 watts of VHO in that shallow tank will be plenty, and the Aquasun also boosts the intensity considerably.

I really do like Squamosas. They are quite hardy clams with some very interesting patterns and textures in the mantle design. They open quite wide also, making them look huge.

:)

I love clams.
